Some estimates say balloting could cost the state as much as $80 million. Critics call it a power grab by Schwarzenegger.
SACRAMENTO – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today called a statewide special election for November – a high-risk gamble that he can leverage his popular appeal to pass proposals that the Legislature has failed to address.
The Nov. 8 election would be just the fifth of its kind in California history.
“With the people’s help, there will be reform,” he announced on live television. “Our broken state government will be modernized and revitalized.”
The measures Schwarzenegger backed that have qualified for the ballot would give the governor power to unilaterally cut spending in times of a budget shortfall, impanel a trio of retired judges to redraw legislative districts in mid-decade and require teachers to work longer to earn tenure.

I agree completely. I am very disappointed in many ways. My only consolation is that at least the Democrats are not in charge and gleefully pushing the toilet handle as they attempt to flush away what is left of traditional America.

I can name people in the hills that had to drive 14 miles to get to their precinct, but still vote in every election. The White House really did let us down in their failure to properly support Simon.
If we could do that, we would win every election.
This has been tried before, but the media attack has proven insurmountable. Last time it was leading 2:1 until the last two weeks, when an incessant blitz of media lies killed it.
Is it not so that there is such a low turnout of conservatives exactly because they believe that to vote for a RINO is not going to motivate them?
This is how I believe that we would elect another Clinton if McCain is our boy.
I am outraged that the mother of the boyfriend was allowed to take this 13 year old child to an abortion clinic, but her own mother was not allowed to see her! To me, this other woman was a kidnapper. She took an underage child from school to have an unauthorized medical procedure performed without the consent of the parents who are the legal guardians.
Thank goodness they have the right to vote on parental notification.
Well then, shame on them! I would rather have a moderate Republican in office than a Clinton any day of the week!

In that California election, Simon was running against Davis. Simon is a traditional conservative, not a RINO.
Thanks for the support Calcowgirl. I am simply doing my part to warn Californians of what has worked and what doesn't work in other state's.
We did try to warn them having a RINO governor would "deliver" absolutely no weight for other Republican candidates (just look at what happened in New Jersey, Illinois, Mass., etc., and how good the RINO governors we had at the time did for the state party...hell, G.W. Bush did WORST than Bob Dole in Illinois when our ultra-liberal RINO Gov. "endorsed" him. And ironically Bush's IL campaign actually finshed 1% higher than he did in CA in the 2004, when the Dems controlled our state instead of the RINOs)
Not that I expect ANY of the Arnoldbots will ever ADMIT they were wrong when 2006 rolls around and they still haven't "delivered" the state to the GOP or "brought the buisnesses back" like they eagerly proclaimed their hero would do. (Please note I am willing to admit my errors in backing the wrong person... Vicente Fox...ugh...major boo-boo on my part)
To those Californians who don't like Illinoisans meddling in your state's affairs, please prepare the Reagan Presidency Library for transport back to his native Illinois. It would make a fine addition to the his national birthplace historic site in Tampico, IL . ;-)

Actually, it seems like the same people who keep electing the far-left socialists are the same ones voting on specific referenda to rein in the excesses of those same socialists. At times, the voters of CA are schizophrenic.

Sounds like the referendum might cost $80 million but save BILLIONS in the long term.
L.A. County set up a totally employee funded pension fund many years ago. Ventura County followed suit, as did others.
Sierra, I don't know about El Dorado, or the teachers' union.
As for L.A. County, before taxes, employees contribute ten percent of their salary into that fund, of which a part are then invested in stocks, bonds, etc., by employee elected Board members.
Last we heard not long ago, the fund was worth over 20 billion dollars, even after the last stock crunch!
L.A.P.D. (city) was totally funded by taxpayers.
The State of California has no authority to take any funds from employee-funded pension funds, combine them to invest, or use at will.
The only way Arnold can win approval. It's about pension monies - and that' all it is about!
