SYDNEY (AFP) - China is using a vast network of spies in an attempt to turn Australia into a "political colony," a defector said, as it was revealed Beijing officials had been allowed to interrogate Chinese held in Australian detention centres.
Former Beijing University professor Yuan Hongbing, the fourth Chinese defector to surface in Australia in the past month, supported charges by a rebel Chinese diplomat that Beijing had an extensive network of agents in the country.
The agents are targeting Chinese dissidents and are also being used to influence political thought "to turn Australia into a political colony of China," Yuan told ABC radio.
"Political colony means the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) will use their ideology to influence Australia's politics and gradually to turn Australia to betray its fundamental principles of freedom and democracy," Yuan said through an interpretde.

Actually, if you read a little more closely, you'll see that the original poster said "nationalist socialist"... which is an apt description (socialism combined with extreme nationalism). If the original poster mistyped, it was an intriguing mistype.
Exactly. Just because the power is in the hands a few and not a Chairman anymore then it must be that communism is dead.
N. Korea represents the old form, China the new. But when Walmart and Intel are pumping cash into the country, many ask how can they be communist? How? By lining up people on the knees and shooting them in the back of the head simply because they want to exercise free speech or practice a form of religion.
So many have forgotten Stalin and Mao. So should we be suprised that they can't recognize them now? On main street maybe but I would think in this forum people would be better informed.

With Chinese products so engrained in our marketplace and with the Chinese gov't holding a nice chunk of our treasuries and the Clinton administration giving access to supercomputers and W-88 technology, if it were to come down to a showdown with them we would have only ourselves to blame.

You are right, it is scary how much of our debt the Chinese own.
My fear is not so much a military conflict since I believe that if they did make a move on Taiwan they would have to deal with the 3rd and 7th Fleets which would be too much for them, but if they wanted to cripple us they simply need to start dumping our debt.
True the fall in the dollar would not help their FX reserves with the current peg but if they are willing to go that far why should they care?
If and when the do decouple from the USD, I would take that a sign that they are ready to do something in the global arena. Right now if they keep growing 6-8% per year and they get sweetheart deals from Putin for oil, they can handle a depressed dollar. The FX reserves they are building will more than compensate.
And some great colonial restaurants they've been opening!

New Zealand's furthest right Party [ACT], has Kenneth Wang as it's newest Member of Parliament. The Chinese make quite a bit of hype out of that on their home ground, but it's not something a lot of Kiwis are aware of.
I have to tell you my Waterloo Chinese restaurant story sometime. Y'all do have some outstanding Indian eateries.
