Two PETA Employees Arrested on Animal Cruelty Charges in N.C.

Two individuals from Hampton Roads, employees of the Norfolk-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, were arrested Wednesday night in Ahoskie, N.C., on animal cruelty charges.

The two were arrested after authorities allege they dumped dead dogs and cats in a dumpster at a shopping center on Memorial Drive in Ahoskie.

Andrew Benjamin Cook, 24, of Virginia Beach, and Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, of Norfolk, were arrested at the shopping center. Police say they found 18 dead animals in the dumpster and 13 dead animals in the couple's van, which according to authorities, is registered to PETA. Both suspects were charged with 31 counts of animal cruelty and eight counts of illegal disposal of animals.

According to police, the animals were from two North Carolina animal shelters - one in Northampton County and the other in Bertie County.

Officials say the animals were alive when they left the shelters, but have not said how they died.

North Carolina officials say they have been investigating reports of dead animals at the shopping center for over a month. Authorities say there were four other incidents of dead animals found in the shopping center dumpster, each on a Wednesday night. Surveillance was conducted this week, resulting in the two arrests.

Cook and Hinkle were released on bond. They have a court date in Winton, N.C., on June 17th.

A PETA spokesperson told WAVY News 10 that the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has a long-standing relationship with shelters to euthanize pets that the shelters feel are no longer adoptable, and the spokesperson is confident the animal cruelty charges will be dropped.

If the animals were put into a dumpster as alleged, the spokesperson termed that 'outrageous.'

PETA says Hinkle has been suspended. Cook is still working for the organization.

No, but I am glad to see there were arrests. Printing this article off for my daughter, who thinks I am too hard on the PETA people.

So PETA contracts to perform euthanasia for animal shelters? Is that right? Oh, man, I hope this thing has legs...

Freggin` unreal isn`t it? Dumping dead animals at a mall of all places. Maybe some fur store was using them. Man, I wish someone took photos.."The ethical treatment of animals by PETA". They have to go affter them over their finances though. PETA is nothing but a money scam, something like 90% of their cash goes into advertising or press for the scam while practically nothing goes towards animal protection or shelters, which is probably why they killed these ones.

Take a Bite out of PETA Despite its deceptively warm-and-fuzzy public image, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has donated over $150,000 to criminal activists -- including those jailed for arson, burglary, and even attempted murder. In 2001, PETA donated $1,500 to the North American Earth Liberation Front, a criminal organization that the FBI classifies as "domestic terrorists." And since 2000, rank-and-file PETA activists have been arrested over 80 times for breaking various laws during PETA protests. Charges included felony obstruction of government property, criminal mischief, assaulting a cabinet official, felony vandalism, performing obscene acts in public, destruction of federal property, and burglary.

And PETA's leadership openly advocates breaking the law. Click here to listen to PETA vegetarian campaign director Bruce Friedrich encouraging activists to commit arson against restaurants, medical laboratories, and banks.

Like millions of other nonprofit groups in the United States (e.g., universities , houses of worship, social service organizations), PETA pays no federal taxes on its income. But few of these other tax-exempt groups share PETA's total disregard for the law. In 2003 PETA collected over $24 million from Americans, avoiding over $3.5 million in federal income taxes. Because this tax break amounts to a huge subsidy, every American taxpayer is footing the bill for PETA's behavior.

PETA's tax-exempt status was granted by the U.S. government on the basis of the group's willingness to conduct itself in a lawful fashion. We believe that PETA has failed to live up to its end of the bargain, and that the Internal Revenue Service should cancel PETA's tax-exempt status.

If you agree, please add your name and contact information below. Your "signature" -- along with those of thousands of other Americans -- will be used to encourage U.S. government officials to take action. PETA is currently being investigated by the IRS, so this is the perfect time to make your opinion known.

Yep, it is right on the water front and directly in front of the Wavy Station. It is a huge building. It sort of makes my skin crawl when I see the enemy within.

Keep me updated on this one please. I have several PETA nuts that need a wakeup.

If PETA supports euthanization of animals and is legally permitted to do so, they should have a permit for the disposal of the carcasses. Otherwise there are a few other laws they have violated regarding disposal. They wouldn't need to be transporting the carcasses to mall dumpsters(another law in there somewhere too). Hmmm....

This is a real black eye for Peta, because it exposes their practices to the well-meaning people who wanted to get rid of a pet without guilt. So if they give it to Peta, they promise it will get "adopted", not snuffed.

But in practical reality, Peta can't deliver on that promise all the time, so they euthanize. And they promised not to do that. And they thereby disillusioned, to some degree, with idiots who "drop off" pets with Peta for "adoption" [nudge nudge wink wink] without any attendant sense of guilt.

And THESE are the people that provide financial support to Peta; who allow them to maintain a mask of respectability, who put a "happy face" on their dark ties to extreme radical groups.

I hope they lose LOTS of support over this.
