The Free Republic Book Club is an informal gathering of readers and lovers of all genre of books, which meets on an irregular basis (whenever I remember to post and have a copy of the ping list available.)

Today's topic: what's on your summer reading list? Whether you are going on vacation, sitting on the beach or just hanging out on your front porch, there's usually a good novel nearby. Any particular plans or will it be a more serendipitous approach?
As for me, picking up a DVD of "The War of the Worlds" is giving me the desire to give Wells another go (I've never made it through any of his books). And while I'm at it, I going to try some Jules Verne.
Currently, I'm reading 3001: The Final Odyssey, a not-for-sale readers' proof edition that I won at a charity book raffle. (There are some other books in that pile waiting to be read. I just finished a 50th anniversary Peanuts collection.)
On the nonfiction front: I finished Mark Levin's book, Men in Black and I'' probably head for the library soon to reserve a few other conservative books.

I read The Kite Runner and it was excellent. Not too political IMHO. I am now reading The Devil in the White City--true story that reads like fiction.
Took the Kite Runner and Middlesex to the beach house last week. Very engaging.

I'm reading "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" in anticipation of the movie coming out in December.
I laughed OUT LOUD all the way through it.
Techniques of Crime Scene Investigations 7th Edition and Criminal Interrogation and Confessions 4th Edition. Woo hoo!
I Finished reading Peter the Great a couple weeks ago, and now I am reading 1984, by George Orwell. Very wierd book. Next I am reading Monster by Frank Peretti.
I was thinking of picking up Zell Millers new book "A deficit of decency". What is it about exactly?
His first book (a national party no more) actually convinced me to stop voting Democrat. It just summed up all of the problems I had with "The Party" and its direction.
I am reading nothing but Free Republic this summer. I just completed my first year of nursing school (last day today!!), and it seemed like I had my nose in a book 24/7. Everyone have a great summer. I'm off to Florida tonight for a week.
have you read her bounty hunter series.....the newest one comes out this summer. I love her comedic writing and I laugh out loud while reading...
I'm reading Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley". It's awesome!
Excellent read - I recommend it instead of "Freakenomics" which sucks.
Just read 3001: The Final Odyssey. Better than 2010, but not as ground breaking as 2001.

I'm not much of a reader (Gen-X'er, nuf said). However, I've kind of been sucked back in to reading novels the past few years.
Anyway, I'm currently reading "Washington's Crossing" by David Fischer, Oxford Press I believe. This guy wrote "The Ride of Paul Revere" about a decade ago to rave reviews.
This is a very well-written and well-researched book. I'm at the point of the chronology where the author delves into the characteristics of the Howe brothers from England.
Nice maps, and interesting reading for the history buffs out there.
I'll let y'all know how it ends! Freedom vs. Tyranny!

Dale Brown, "Act of War," where he continues his story involving the "tin men" battle suits. I also hope to read "South Park Republicans," plus, for work, John Keegan's "Mask of COmmand," and Tom Sowell's "Black Rednecks . . . ."

Just finished Anna Karenina - the entire book! Took weeks.
"The Time Traveler's Wife" is exceptional.
If no one has read "The Red Tent," I recommend it highly.
I read The Devil in the White City, too. I loved it. I thought the parts about the planning of the fair might be a little stale, but they were just facinating. The author paints such a vivid picture of what Chicago was like in those days.

The Crime Scene book is good so far. I just finished Practical Homicide Investigation for the third time. For a reference book it reads like a novel to me. The Interview book is a little stale for me. I've got a promotional exam coming up in November so it's study study study.

I never "got" Battle Cry of Freedom. I found it tedious, lacking in theme or analysis, and weighed down in irrelevant detail. Instead, I heartily recommend the 8-volume series by Allan Nevins, "The Ordeal of the Union/War of the Union."
