Regrets? Durbin has one

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Friday he regretted any misunderstandings caused by his comments earlier this week comparing American interrogators at Guantanamo Bay to Nazis.

The White House, Senate Republicans and others had called for an apology after Durbin's comments Tuesday.

Durbin made the comparison after reading an FBI agent's report describing detainees at the Naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as being chained to the floor without food or water in extreme temperatures.

''If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for human beings,'' Durbin said Tuesday.

On Friday, Durbin tried to clarify the issue. ''I have learned from my statement that historical parallels can be misused and misunderstood. I sincerely regret if what I said caused anyone to misunderstand my true feelings: Our soldiers around the world and their families at home deserve our respect, admiration and total support," he said in another statement.

Thanks, but I want to see the WHOLE memo. What we're seeing is obviously a redacted copy.

Durbin is smart. He'll say he can't release the rest of the memo for national security reasons.....yeah!

For what is a man, what has he got? If not himself, then he has naught.

Sen. Durbin, you are a nothing. You are a heartless, soul-less shell of a man; you have sold out your country for personal and political gain. If you possess a conscience it should be hard for you to live with yourself right now, because I know I am having trouble living with your destructive, hate-filled statements. I hope you get everything you deserve, you lying traitor, and the sooner the better.

Leni, the memo is on the internet here (PDF document).

A few odd things about this memo.

(1) It starts off describing two observations wherein the detainees had urinated on themselves in most cases. Most of two would be what?

(2) The agent describes a total of five observations, all of them negative. Was this the total number he observed, or was he instructed to report only negative things?

(3) The agent observed a detainee in a room without food or water. Is he insinuating that he was being starved? I am in a room right now without food or water.

(4) He describes a detainee who had apparently pulled his hair out. Doesn't this say more about the fanaticism of the detainee than the behavior of the interrogators?

Bottom line ... the purpose of this memo and the motivation of the agent are suspect. I hope someone looks into it.

Call Harkin anyway - if nothing else to register your feelings and aggravate his staff. That's what you pay him for. :o) They're all holding their fingers to the wind.

Absolutely, screw the regret crap, everyone with half a brain realizes what this creep meant. His heart is with the terrorists, America is his enemy. Big Dick needs to have the gonads to stand up for his convictions. He's out there for the gays..., stop being a damn hypocrite, do as you tell them to do.

Well, there is the lame non-apologizing apology. Thursday a FEW Republican Senators made a little noise on the floor of the Senate.
Next the Democrats circle the wagons and blame the Republicans.
We are already seeing the MSM rally behind Durbin.
This flap will be over by July 1.

I think that would play into the moonbat's hands.

Revenge is a dish best served cold. Think of how delicious it would be to beat him in an election or have him decide that it wasn't even worth running because of this.

For now - let's keep him around and hope he says more stupid things!

Senate Republican's either are not listening to their base... or their so infatuated with 'comity' that they've turned queer on us.

I choose the latter.

I choose both---we ain't the base. The big, and I mean BIG, money is the base and they get listened to. We don't get listened to because we're not the base.

Woodrow Wilson had Eugene Debs, a Presidential candidate, charged with sedition and thrown in prison for criticizing American involvement in World War I.

Republicans of today don't have the prunes to do what is necessary. I'm ashamed of them.

(4)" He describes a detainee who had apparently pulled his hair out. Doesn't this say more about the fanaticism of the detainee than the behavior of the interrogators?"

It also says he was chained hand to foot. Small question, but how do you pull your hair out if you are chained hand to foot?

No food? No water? Certainly the prison guards were just trying to instill the detainee with a sense of euphoria....

he regrets the YOU misunderstood him....it is all your fault, not his.

Exactly. He regrets that we are too dense to understand his subtle thought patterns. Kind of like John Kerry and his "nuance," isn't it? Just pathetic. But of course, the Dems always close ranks and protect their own. Trent Lott, on the other hand, got hammered. No matter how much he apologized, it was never enough. Yet the Democrats can "apologize" by saying, "I regret that most Americans are too stupid to understand my exalted intellect," and they figure that takes care of everything!

I think she did break it. One of her show buddies (Lee?) was up late with the baby and caught it on C-Span, so they discussed it on the show the next morning. Good catch, Laura.

Good morning.
"His regrets stem from everyone UNDERSTANDING him..."

dick Durbin's apology is very much like Hanoi Jane's.
