Family Vacation
Washington Post ^ | 19 June 2005 | Michael Leahy

Posted on 06/19/2005 1:45:23 PM PDT by Lorianne

His name is Mike Rubino, but until recently none of the women who bought his sperm to get pregnant had ever seen him or known him as anything other than Donor 929. Rubino left the sperm business for good a few years ago, thinking it would be another decade at least before any children found him. Now he is standing inside the Los Angeles International Airport, staring at an arrivals gate, awaiting the appearance of two children he has fathered but never met, along with their single mother, a Massachusetts psychotherapist named Raechel McGhee.

At that moment, 44-year-old McGhee and her children are descending toward him in blackness and rain. "It is kind of unbelievable that this is about to happen, but I'm relaxed," Rubino says, not looking so relaxed, fidgeting with his brown hair, anxiously surveying an airport monitor until he's found a status report on the McGhees' flight. "On approach," he reads, craning his head toward the arrivals door. "I think their mother said she'd have the kids in slickers," he says, "and she said that she would be in a raspberry slicker." He falls silent. "Maybe this is going to take a while," he says, but then he glimpses a sliver of a raspberry-colored garment moving amid a horde of travelers, spotting a tall woman. He mutters, "There she is -- there they are."

He hurries forward, calling out to the woman, "Hi, hi."

The woman changes direction, veering toward him, smiling. McGhee looks Rubino up and down as he gets close, hugging him casually. She turns to her kids, gesturing at Rubino, and says, "Look who's here."

Is it just me, or is this whole thing disgusting?

I'd choose the masturbatorium myself over spending an evening with the 300 pound womyn.

Father's Day cards used to have pictures of fishing scenes or cars. Now they have turkey basters.

...sperm banks and their use of paid donors, who bore no financial or any other legal responsibilities, it was said, to the women who used their purchased sperm or to any children born as a result.

Yeah, sure...until some bottom-feeder lawyer and the child-support mafia see a whole new class of suckers to shake down. An activist judge will hold them responsible faster than you can say "It's for the CHYLLLLDRUN!!!"

Every time I see a story like this I think of this quote. "Science has made us gods even before we are worthy of being men."

Happy Father's Day... Thanks, Washington Post, for successfully perverting it by choosing this day to publish this article.

As a contrast, read this offertory prayer I delivered at church this morning:

Father's Day, contrary to popular misconception, was not established as a holiday in order to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards. In fact when a "father's day" was first proposed in America there were no Father's Day cards!

Now, depending on who you believe, the first “Father’s Day” was either in 1908 or 1910. Here are two of the most commonly accepted stories:

Mrs. John Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a "father's day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Mr. Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd's mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington State. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. So supposedly the first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington.

A second origin cited is slightly less known -- the Methodist church in Fairmont WV has a sign declaring the "First Father's Day July 5, 1908", beating the Dodd claim. That date was six months after the huge coal mine disaster of December 6, 1907, which killed at least 361 men – the largest mine disaster in American history.

Regardless, early in the last century Americans were beginning to celebrate a "father's day." In 1924 President Coolidge gave support to the idea of a national Father's Day. In 1966 President Johnson signed a proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.

Strangely enought, it has become a day to not only honor your father, but all men who act as a father figure. These days stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends are sometimes also honored on Father's Day. And even greater perversion is honored, if you read today's Washington Post's Sunday magazine.

But really, doesn’t Father’s Day go back to creation? When our triune God said “let us make man in our own image”?

The Bible calls fathers to: love, command, instruct, guide and warn, train, rebuke, restrain, punish, chasten, nourish, supple the needs of, and to do not provoke their children. Hasn’t our heavenly Father been perfect in those respects!

Like Mrs. Dodd, maybe we don’t realize the strength and selflessness of our fathers, and of our Father, until we get the perspective of adulthood.

So children, honor your earthly father, as was commanded by God to Moses and the Israelites. And congregation, lets honor God our Father now, with our tithes and offerings.

Father, our gifts are small, especially compared to your love. We were created by Your will, and not by our own. Thanks Abba Father – daddy – for loving us so much. Amen.

Every time I see a story like this I think of the oldMargarine ad with the lightening and thunder and the threatening voice from the heavens, "It's not NICE to fool Mother Nature."

This man and woman have a beautiful family and have forged a very nice relationship -- for now. I'd be surprised if it stays that amicable. The mother obviously wants more from the father. Perhaps the father does too, but he also wants solitude; and it won't be long before he becomes resentful of the demands having a family puts on him. He also doesn't sound like he is very wealthy, so what he can give the kids has to come directly out of his own time. That's great, but it wasn't his bargain.

Of course, I think his reason for becomimg a donor in the first place was really stupid and selfish.

And I think it is just creepy to be giving children sperm pins and taking them on tours of sperm banks and talking so openly about what should be a private and sacred act.

And wait until the other woman finds out who he is and he has another family to deal with! Eeeeeek!

***Adults meeting their needs on children***

How right you are. Here's the mother's own statement:

***...but none of the men could possibly be more than a pale substitute for a committed and unencumbered man, thought McGhee***

Well...gee, Mom...do you think? And were you thinking about anyone but yourself when you had "donor" children?

Whenever I hear of one of these intnetionally fatherless children being created for a single woman or lesbian couple I always hope they have a boy. Then they can explain to him why he is needed only as a sperm donor or ATM.

Good thinking, Kozak. With the great example this boy has from his "father," he'll think fathers should have NO responsibility. Then they'll be another bunch of fatherless kids. And so on.

Well as opposed to them having girls who think the exact same thing and having more too. I just like the uncomfortable irony involved for the selfish women.
