Utah Boy Scout Found Alive in Woods
Fox News ^ | Tuesday, June 21, 2005 | FOX News' Alicia Acuna and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

KAMAS, Utah — Boy Scout officials confirmed Tuesday that a missing Boy Scout has been found alive in Utah, four days after he vanished.

Searchers in the area where Brennan Hawkins (search) was located said he had no major injuries, however it could not be confirmed. He was found just before noon near Lily Lake, about five miles northeast of the Boy Scout camp where he was last seen Friday, said Kay Godfrey, director of public relations for the Great Salt Lake Council.

"He has been found, he is alive, and he's in pretty good shape for an 11-year-old boy," Godfrey told The Associated Press. "It's a modern day miracle that he's been found."

Rescuers said Hawkins was being transported by helicopter to a children's hospital in Salt Lake City.

The boy vanished from a Boy Scout camp in the Uinta Mountains (search) on Friday.

Emergency workers said Hawkins must have had to cross a river in order to end up where he was found.

Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds said earlier that the boy's chances were good because nights had been warm, with temperatures falling only into the 50s. The area is about 100 miles northeast of Salt Lake City.

Sorry, he broke the stay put rule. When you are lost, stumbling around in a panic only makes it worse.
That being said, I sure am pleased he is OK.

Yes, He hears the prayers of His children through Christ.

Yes He does, but the young scout's next merit badge should be Orienteering.

""It's a modern day miracle that he's been found."

I attribute this wonderful story more to the actions of dedicated, caring, driven human beings, rather than 'miraculous' circumstances. It's amazing what determined people can do when they work together for a common goal. Glad the Scout is safe and he's certainly earned his Outdoor Survival merit badge!

Orienting a map isn't a Merit Badge. I believe it was part of First Class requirements.

Orienteering is a merit badge. In my day it was "Map Reading". He did accomplish some of his Tenderfoot, Second and First Class rank requirements though.

Not to be picky, but he blew the big one by not staying in one place. Anyway you look at it, Boy Scouting teaches some valuable skills.

How did he get lost? I remember the last one that was never found was simply walking a short distance and got turned around. I am elated over this one.

No, the Sovereignty of God would still stand. God does hear the prayers of all His children in Christ. Have you gotten sick yet of what this world offers - death, destruction and degradation. Call upon the Lord Jesus Christ and turn away from wickedness and ask for Salvation. The Heavenly Father awaits with open arms with a Salvation to great for you to comprehend.

Our God is an awesome God Yes, He hears the prayers of His children through Christ.

True, but he doesn't always say "Yes". If this kid hadn't been found, it doesn't mean God wasn't listening or didn't care.

I'm thankful that this kid was found and I'm thankful for God's mercy on my soul. But I would think no less of God if they had found the kid dead.

Kids, and some older folks, daydream. I don't know much about that area, but in heavy forest it is possible to be lost after a 5 minute walk.

Orienteering was a merit badge in my day. Was it required for Eagle? I don't think so. The required ones had a white ring around them, the non-required had green. I think my orienteering badge was green.

Of course that could all have changed by now.

Believe me, there is. Search for it on the web; there is an image of it as well as the requirements.

Good idea but not enough room on the tagline. ;)

I am pleased he is OK too. However, the stay put rule doesn't apply when a person is in need of water or shelter. I've always trained Scouts to be sure to observe the direction and landmarks they travel in and around and most importantly, when in thick vegetation or featureless terrain where prominent landmarks aren't present (semiarid deserts), MARK YOUR TRAIL, IF YOU WANT TO SURVIVE AND FIND YOUR WAY BACK!

Orienteering is still a merit badge; not an Eagle requirement though.
