"Mr. Khoan emphatically denied that any live American prisoners of war remain in Vietnam. Several U.S. POW/MIA groups disagree. The lobby group Rolling Thunder Inc. said the last sighting of a live American POW in Vietnam occurred in the late 1990s. Yes, and the Communists gave the word of Kerry and McCain to vouch for their freaking lies...
The two "Senators" ended any chance of ever getting the whole truth from these communist bastards by "closing the books" as the last action of their Senate Committee "investigation".....
The Communists were so happy with their reception in Washington -- they granted Kerry's relative a HUGE development contract in Vietnam....
Yeah, sure --- I believe the bastards....
Just like I believe Islam is a religion of peace..
There will be no peace with the Communist Vietnamese, so long as any of us old unbrainwashed old farts are around..

Crazy worldUnderstatement. I know there is logic to building a chain of 'allies' around China's borders, and that Vietnam has its own ax to grind with Beijing... but this is tough to get used to.
Had any other president come up with this 'military assistance' to Hanoi, I'd be out protesting.

It seems we are intent on committing national suicide when it comes to the Communists (the biggest threat of all).

"Why are we training another communist country?"Why, what else can it be but to lure them into the capitalist mindset of free enterprise and greed so they can join the great New World Order currently forming in Europe.

As there's little love lost between the Vietnamese and the Chinese, a limited action of the type described in the article appears to be eminently rational.

Re #9
Kim Jong-il shoulders part of the blame for this development. His nuclear blackmail, coupled with Chinese intransigence to change the status quo vis a vis N. Korea, lead to this drastic policy.

I agree with your thoughts above.
Should we be asking what the pressure is that is being brought down on President Bush?
Something is causing him to do strange things, he is not an
evil man, nor do I think there is anything dumb about him.
Therefore, I do give thought to the "why" he makes some of his decisions.

You may very well have the correct answer, as there does appear to be a real reason for this action.
I know that I am amazed at some of the information that is out there on the nuclear threat.
It is to be feared, at least by me.
Thank you for having and sharing your special knowledge with us.

When Churchill was criticized for working with Stalin, he said something to the effect that he'd make a deal with the Devil himself to fight Hitler.
What does the president know about China's intentions that makes him want to give Hanoi's military 'advice'? Maybe he believes uncertainly in the south would make Beijing rethink a strike at Taiwan? Or is it payback for China's hands off approach to Kim Jong il?
