"The men, who said they lived in North Carolina and were on their way to California when they were arrested, had documents in their possession indicating they were released and had a January 2006 hearing scheduled in federal court in Pittsburgh, Burgoyne said."
The INS agents are likely in a position where they simply can't do their job correctly.
Their budget simply won't allow them to pay for incarcerating illegal aliens for six months until they get their hearing. This means that unless there is evidence that they are dangerous, they get released until their hearing. If they are in the country illegally, there's nothing to encourage them to show up for their hearing.
Our system is broken.
It can't take six months to get a hearing if we're going to be able to determine their status and deport illegal aliens.
We need more federal judges to handle immigration hearings. A lot more federal judges.
Me need more border patrol agents, but they won't be able to do much if we can't detain and process the illegal aliens they catch.
The INS probably deos have some employees that aren't doing their jobs as well as they should.
It's hard to retain good people when they aren't given what they need to do their jobs. It's also hard to fire bad people from government jobs.
That's probably true, but the agents in this office are complaining that the aliens ever were detained in the first place. In other words, they want deputies who stop a speeding van with 20 undocumenteds inside just to say "have a nice day" and send them on their way, without even getting the INS involved. This has been the case for the past several years in this area. It's one thing to process them and set a hearing six months hence; it's quite another not to go to even that much effort.
They had some real cajones. Maybe that was the action they were told to take in their Illegal Immigrants Handbook?
That's not my point. The documents actually give them an excuse to be here. "Jo, man. I got theese steenking documents that tells me I gotta stay."
It's surreal. Our government is actually telling they have to stay in order be at the hearing.
Ah, also true.
"That's probably true, but the agents in this office are complaining that the aliens ever were detained in the first place."
Yea, that's a different and more serious problem.
At least they didn't have hazmat licenses:
CHICAGO - Authorities arrested six illegal immigrants and were looking for 10 more who managed to get Illinois commercial drivers licenses that permit them to haul hazardous materials.
"At this point, no terrorist activity or public safety issues," are involved, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Tim Counts said Thursday.
The six men - from the Philippines, Jordan, Belize and Mongolia - were arrested in the Chicago area during the last two weeks, and the government has started deportation proceedings against them, Counts said.
Their identities were not released and Counts did not know the names of their employers. He said some of the men worked as commercial truck drivers.
According to the Transportation Security Administration, there are 2.7 million licensed hazmat drivers in the United States, including 115,000 in Illinois. Nationally, there have been several arrests of illegal immigrants who had obtained the licenses.

The gall of knocking on the chief's door and demanding the return of the Honda. Well, why not? We're assumed to be incredibly stupid since everyone in Mexico knows we're giving away the store --(the entire country.)
Elect law enforcement officials.
The Sheriff should immediately revoke ALL MOU's with Federal Agencies.
All of my immigrant ancestors came here legally.
Oh, yeah?
Try not paying your income or property taxes and then make that statement...

It's going to be a whoooole different ballgame in 2008. The party's over.
What are we paying the INS to do? If they don't do their jobs, why should we pay them?
