RAMONA – A 21-year-old man suffered serious injuries to his hands Thursday when a homemade dry-ice bomb blew up as he held it, the Sheriff's Department reported.

Sheriff's deputies said the device detonated about 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot of an auto parts store on Main Street, severely lacerating the victim's hands between the thumbs and forefingers.

Investigators from the Sheriff's Bomb/Arson unit learned that the victim, an assistant manager in the store, was seen assembling the bomb inside the store and had carried it out to the parking lot. He was seen shaking the device with both hands moments before it exploded, said Sheriff's Lt. Edna Ito.

Making dry-ice bombs is a felony under California law, punishable by a maximum of one year in custody and/or a $10,000 fine. – Gregory Alan Gross

I don't know what is stupider, this man for the stunt, or the law that makes such stupidity (shake up some dry ice and water in a pop bottle) into a felony.

Felony... )o; I have fond memories of bakingsoda, dry ice, and bolt homemade fireworks. The best was the package of sparklers and ductape.

I've been wanting to make a dry ice bomb, but I never thought about shaking it...

I suppose everyone knows what one is... if you put dry ice in a plastic soda bottle it will go off with a loud bang. If you put it in a small space like a mail box, I should imagine it would cause a lot of damage. Only trouble is, it's rather unpredictable how long it takes for the pressure to build up sufficiently for the bottle to blow.

He didn't have to shake the bottle to get that reaction. He just needed to wait for the bottle to get cold. I used to work at a place that used dry ice and people were warned about sticking their pop bottles into it to keep it cold. Plastic bottles were fine but glass explodes. One guy nearly lost all of his fingers on the one hand when he forgot.

Yeah, you'd think there are enough real felons for the LEO to chase after without calling this one too.

A one liter pop bottle will send a plastic 5gal bucket about 20 to 30 ft straight up with a little luck.

I won't began to talk about acetleyne ballons, :-)

Guess some of us had more misspent youths than others:) I actually think one of our science teachers showed us this trick to demonstrate the power of compressed gas or some such. I think he was sorry everafter:)

OK, let's see...

1. I've never heard of a dry ice bomb before. I mean I watched a lot of TV, read a lot of books, read a lot newspapers and news items, surfed the web, seen a lot of movies, read a lot of magazines, traveled all over the world, but never, never have I heard of a dry ice bomb. It's true I've heard of dry ice before, but never a dry ice bomb.
2. I have no idea how one would make a dry ice bomb.
3. Even if I did know how to make one, I have no idea where to buy dry ice. I've been to a lot of stores and I've never seen dry ice for sale in any of them.
4. This story makes it seem as if everyone knows what a dry ice bomb is. What a retarded reporter. I mean it's like saying a guy was caught with Martian underwear in his car. Most of us would be thinking Martian underwear, what the eff is that?

If you have ever been interested in amateur science projects, the stuff comes up not infrequently. For example: It's a coolant for do it yourself bubble chamber experiments. You can freeze a lemon solid with it and shatter it like glass with a hammer. That kind of thing.

Acetylene balloons - carbide?

I used to make Hydrogen by mixing lye and water and adding aluminum foil (when I wasn't making my own black gunpowder for firecrackers).
