'King of the Hill' Democrats?
The New York Times ^ | June 26, 2005 | Matt Bai

If you watch a lot of cable news, by now you've probably heard someone refer to a bloc of voters known as '' 'South Park' conservatives.'' The term comes from the title of a new book by Brian C. Anderson, a conservative pundit who adapted it from the writer Andrew Sullivan, and it refers to the notion that Comedy Central's obscene spoof of life in small-town America, with its hilarious skewering of liberal snobbery, is somehow the perfect crucible for understanding a new breed of brash and irreverent Republican voters. In truth, aside from its title, Anderson's book has very little to say about ''South Park'' itself; it's really just a retread of the argument that the mainstream media is losing its grip on world domination, marketed rather cynically to appeal to the same red-state radio hosts and book clubs that make so many right-wing polemics best sellers.

I love this show even if it pokes fun at the way I grew up and the people around me. One of the good things about being a conservative and shunning political correctness is that I can still have a sense of humor. And besides, I think that it also pokes fun at liberals too.

I will never forget one episode where a group of Buddhists convinced Bobby that he was the next Dali Lama. The Hills went to their Methodist minister (a woman) who was your typical liberal Methodist minister. "Bobby, do you love Jesus?" The Methodist minister wouldn't dare try talking Bobby out of the silly idea that he was the next Dali Lama.

These days, I watch very few entertainment shows on TV but I make time for King of the Hill.

I have read South Park Conservatives, an interesting take. The problem is these 'liberals' are really Socialists/Communists or at least the left is being led by the same and as I heard one such democrat the other day describe themselves as the “intellectuals” of government and party. They look down on their own as well – the Democratic Party has been plundered by the Democratic Socialists of America; in other words, there is no Democratic Party today, they are all Socialists whether they know it or not.

One of my favorites was when Khan helped to sneak Hank across the border.

Personally I think the show pokes plenty of fun at liberals as well.

The Hill's aren't native Texans? Didn't they move to Texas?

Maybe it's just Peggy?

part of the fun of the show - even though it pokes fun - is that it is a pretty true portrayal I think I have seen every seen show now that the USA or some channel shows hours in a row..... plus I don't think Hank Hill is a Dem. I think he is a "Repuke"

If we're discussing the article instead of the show (which I am unable to watch because my life does not include TV), you would see that it represents more wishful thinking by the Times.

The Dems, in their view, could appeal to such guys, if only they could avoid insulting their core values and interests. But that is exactly the one thing they cannot resist doing. While the Times itself may be able to softpedal, that is certainly not the case with hard-core Democratic partisans.

Then there's Family Guy liberals, I guess--the type who admire Brian for the Kucinich sticker on his car (yes, dogs can drive in the FG universe) and the fact that he reads Utne Reader...
he mirrors the creator of the show, big lib Seth Macfarlane
(Seth voices Brian and the voice he gave Brian is very similar to his own normal speaking voice).
Macfarlane managed to do yet another "Bush is dumb" gag on FG recently (though the spinoff American Dad had conservative Steve Smith refer to Hillary as a bitch).

Despite the lib content I like both shows though and certainly don't agree with Macfarlane's politics.
(Get Michael Moore to play Peter Griffin in a live
action FG movie--just shave off beard.)

btw Seth almost met his doom on 9/11--he was booked on
one of the planes that hit the WTC but missed the flight.
Ironically enough an episode of FG pre 9/11 had gags
about Osama hijacking planes.

I think Hank is a Conservative. Peggy is a Liberal. Khan is a Republican. Dale is a Libertarian. Bill is probably a Democrat, but he doesn't know it. Boomhauer is probably a Republican. It's a great show.

"The Hill's aren't native Texans? Didn't they move to Texas?"

Peggy moved to Arlen in high-school. Hank was actually born in NYC, MUCH to his disappointment, when his mom and dad were there for his dad to try and kill Castro.

Dang it, I I know it sounds bad but that is about the only show I watch and I watch it whenever it's on.

Yeah... All those "King of the Hill Democrats" is why Bush got 75% of the vote in Texas.

EVERYBODY in Texas USED to be a Democrat. Now there are still a lot that say they are, but they support ZERO of the current Democrat Agenda (except for the flower children whack jobs, of course).

If the NY Times thinks King of the Hill is spawning a new breed of Abortion loving gun grabbers that offer Cradle to grave mommy government, they are kidding themselves (much like the current Democrat party).

You say that as if the NY Times and current Democrat party are two different things.

"the Democratic Party has been plundered by the Democratic Socialists of America; in other words, there is no Democratic Party today, they are all Socialists whether they know it or not."

I couldn't agree more. To me, the Democrat party is anti-American (judge them by their predictable deeds). Where are the America First Democrats? Lieberman, Nunn, Boren. Only one is active and was totally marginalized in 2004.

If only more men were like Hank. Sigh. A true believer in personal responsibility. My favorite episode was when he hired someone who turned out to be a drug addict and he couldn't fire the guy because of his 'disability'. He was forced to 'accomodate' his disability by letting him come in late, sleep on the job, etc., which caused all of the other workers to follow suit.

And let's not forget he killed "fitty" men in WWII. :) Cotten is a great character.

Lol, that is a good episode. The junkie changes his name to Hank Hill. The real Hank quits, reducing the number of employees, thus freeing Strickland Propane from the absurd regulations.

When Buck rehires Hank, it's at a lower salary.

"The last couple of Hank Hill's have been nothing but trouble. One was a druggie and the other one quit on me."

King of the Hill Quotes:

PEGGY: "Oh, give me a break. I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court?"
HANK: "Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren."

PEGGY: "I am going to scare my students, exactly the way President Reagan scared hundreds of millions of Russians with his Star Wars death beam."
HANK: "God, I miss voting for that man."

Dale: "Guns don't kill people, the Government does."

COTTON: "Look at you, all high and mighty, sittin' in that wheelchair like some Franklin D. Eleanor Roosevelt!"

HANK: "America is my country and I love her. I wouldn't enter her in any way that's unnatural."

BOBBY: "We learned in school that you don't call them "Indians" any more, you call them "Native Americans." It's like saying "same-sex partner" instead of --"
HANK & PEGGY: "Bobby!!"

DALE: "You just be careful. Computers have already beaten the Communists at chess. Next thing you know, they'll be beating humans."

I love King of the Hill.

You know, rface, my sisters said that YOU reminded them of Hank. Same sort of attitude, and you kind of look like him (especially riding around on that lawnmower!!!!)

They think that Bobby is a lot like Josh. (A chubby, lovable doofus with a heart of gold. Didn't you say he reminded you of Josh too?)

Who would I be on that show??? Probably not Peggy....maybe Dale's wife Nancy (the one that does the weather and calls everyone "Shuuggg").

And of course I can say that I personally know the real Boomhauer (or at least the guy he MUST have been modelled on. Not that I can understand a word he says...lol)

Trivia break:

Q. Incidentally, do you all know where the original Hank Hill character first appeared?

A. Believe it or not, on "Beavis and Butthead"!!!!

Seriously...he looks a little different (bald and drawn a little rougher), but his voice is played by the same guy (Mike Judge), he has a lot of the same mannerisms, and he's on the lawnmower. IIRC, his name isn't revealed, but he is a neighbor of the boys. They are looking to get some money, so they agree to do some chores for him (paint and prune the trees). Being Beavis and Butthead, they sniff some paint thinner before they get going, and of course, all hell breaks loose (paint everywhere, including the cat's butt, fallen trees, smashed cars, a HUGE homeowners insurance claim, etc.)

No, I'm not a huge B&B fan (never really watched the show back then, but looking at it now, it is kinda funny in a sick, lowbrow, sort of way...my standards must be slipping..)

"Boomhauer" is the one who showed me this...he's got a big collection of old MTV, Comedy Central, and Fox cartoons on tape. He found this episode while he was looking at an old unlabeled tape that he thought a big fiery crash at an NHRA event that he wanted to show me was on.

Miss you, Shuuggg. Hope you're staying cool. XOXO
