The Defense Department is looking for a few good homes in the San Antonio area to volunteer to care for potential military working dogs in their homes.

The program is designed for volunteers to help raise Belgian Malinois puppies that have been bred at Lackland AFB. As adults, the dogs will serve in the forefront of the war on terrorism.

The volunteers will be given the dogs at the age of 9 weeks. Volunteers will be matched up with a puppy and given the materials needed to raise it.

Volunteers must go through training and also be able to take the puppy to its required training. Puppies must be raised until they are between 7 and 9 months old.

For more information on volunteering, call (210) 671-3686.

I was wondering when they'd get to the 3rd Amendment. Here it comes!

I love and have always had shepherds. I've not heard of this breed .. they are impressive. Though they resemble them so closely, they have some notable differences with shepherds:

"They are significantly different both in body structure and temperament. The Malinois is a somewhat smaller dog with lighter bone. The Malinois stands square, well up on its toes, while the GSD has a long, sloping back and walks flatter on the foot. The Malinois head is more refined and chiseled, with smaller, more triangular ears. The Malinois is a fawn dog, with black overlay (the tips of the hair are black), while the GSD is typically tan, with a black saddle. The Malinois is considered to be more alert and faster to respond than the GSD, but also more sensitive, which can make its training more difficult."

American Belgian Malinois Club

If I could have a dog now, I'd get one.

This should be a reality show, like Cell Dogs.

Yes! Thanks!

The ONLY problem I have, which I'm SURE will be a major detriment...is I have a Shepherd already...albeit a good one, who'd let another dog in. And a stupid little miniature dachsund who's temporarily living with us. She's CUTE, but annoying....barking all the time...

BUT. Yes, please look into it. You never know...they might let us!
