Study ranks July 4 vacation bottlenecks

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Americans taking to the roads during the July 4 holiday weekend are almost certain to encounter a traffic bottleneck somewhere, but the biggest is likely to be west of Portland, Oregon, the American Highway Users Alliance said Thursday.

The road between Oregon's Willamette Valley, where Portland sits, and the Pacific coast is known for recreation, wineries and beauty.

This weekend, it will also be known for slow traffic, the group said in a study titled "Are We There Yet?"

Interstate 64 in the Tidewater region of southeastern Virginia is second on the group's list of vacation bottlenecks, followed by the Maryland-Delaware shore, Branson, Missouri, and North Carolina's Outer Banks.

Rounding out the Top 10 are Cape Cod, the Jersey Shore, California's Napa Valley, the Amish country of Pennsylvania and the Catskill Mountains in New York.

Judging from the parking lot on I-93 southbound from Boston this afternoon, the Cape crowds have already started down.

I generally try to not leave a 2 mile radius of my house on July 4. Gets me to the parade, friends' house to hang out at the pool, and can even see some fireworks.

It's a no brainer, we're right smack in the middle of the Megalopolis.

I live in Annapolis, work in Annapolis. Friday is a horror story--if you don't leave by 3pm to go home, you will sit in a "parking lot" from Annapolis to the Bay Bridge. It's just awful.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee will be a crawl. The Smokies will live up to their namesake due to smog.

I was just on this road 20 minutes ago, a normal 30 minute trip from I-295&I-64 to Williamsburg took 1 hour and 45 minutes...sheer hell....

I live in Stevensville - ACROSS the Bay Bridge. The weekends start on Wed. now.

Oh, and the Transportation Cops just sit and wait for those who finally 'break free' from the bridge traffic. Beware!

The entire route from Southern California to Viva Las Vegas....idling and inching for miles and miles and miles and more miles.

Jump to the afternoon/evening at the end of the holiday, and it's the entire route from Vegas back to L.A.

Thank God I take the boat home. NJ transit is a horror show (between switching problems, packed trains, and the obligitory non air conditioned car, it is hell), as well as the Turnpike and GSP.

I know, it's a mess. We have wanted to live on the eastern shore for some time now; continue to look all the time. With my husband in sales all over Maryland, we are waiting for "retirement". I don't know how long I can wait, however, to get to your beautiful side of the bay.
