Liberals ready to abandon US right to abortion
The Observer/Guardian Unlimited ^ | July 3, 2005 | Gaby Wood

Last autumn, in the midst of a presidential election, America's Democrats were fighting furiously to protect what they described as a constitutional right - to have an abortion.

But in an extraordinary turn of events, some argue that it is the single issue standing in the way of their election prospects. They are daring to say what once was regarded as heresy - that it is time to let the argument go.

Abortion may still be the most divisive issue in the US, but in a move indicative of creeping conservatism, Democrats now seem happy to amend - even relinquish - their position on it.

On Friday pro-choice campaigners received another blow - Sandra Day O'Connor, the first women to serve in the US Supreme Court, announced her retirement. Her crucial pro-choice vote has now gone and George Bush is likely to replace her with a conservative .

There has been unprecedented discussion about 'letting go of Roe' - meaning Roe v Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that decriminalised abortion. Conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks argued that 'unless Roe v Wade is overturned, politics will never get better'. Liberals, he believes, have lost touch with working-class Americans because they rely on the courts to impose their views and have never had to debate 'values' with those voters.

It is amazing to me the focus on this issue when we live in a socialistic country. Why isn't the focus on getting rid of socialism? It's like someone dying of cancer and getting all riled up over a blister... (IMO)

Democrats' plan is not to legalize abortion. That's not their top priority. Their top priority is to bring on socialism and destroy the country. That's their goal. They will do anything to get to power and take away the economic freedoms from us.

If this is true coming from a foreign news outlet, Thank You Dubya' for your efforts in making this happen!

We don't live in a socialistic country. We live in a capitalist one in which a socialist shell has been installed via the courts.

Obviously it's cracking.

Quick refresher... http://freedompage.home.mindspring.com/UN1963.htm

Won't happen. Though I agree with Brooks that it would be their smartest move, but then, that's why they won't do it.

It would be the smartest move because it would send the abortion issue to the state legislatures, and conservatives would be surprised to discover that they don't have the majority in the vast number of states.

The liberal/socialist press is not going to stress pro-choice anymore, they'll leave it alone so the dems can campaign on other issues. It's bad politics now to put pro-abortion in the face of America.

Now they will be very stealth about abortion. But they will never give up aborting human life, it's in the blood of every darn socialist/communist lib.

One of the first steps to crack it would be to privatize the school system and stop government funding of higher education.

Do you really think that the judicial murder of 35 million babies is just a minor blister? Many Americans would disagree.

What I think could happen, Red-State Democrat Pols move towards being pro-choice...hopefully causing a major split in the party...even a few to cross over to the GOP namely, Ben Nelson and a few congressmen

But in an extraordinary turn of events, some argue that it is the single issue standing in the way of their election prospects. They are daring to say what once was regarded as heresy - that it is time to let the argument go.

They'll let it go only until they're back in power.

Funny though... Dems claim 80% of the people support abortion and gun control, yet they keep losing elections on these issues.

It's almost like they're lying to us.
