'Wash Post' Wonders if Leaker of Plame's Identity Was a Reporter

The Washington Post, declaring Wednesday an "historic" day in the history of the press in America, suggested that perhaps the "leaker" of Valerie Plame's identity as a covert CIa operative was not a Bush administration official but a reporter (or reporters).

In a Wednesday A3 story, Carol Leonnig writes, "Sources close to the investigation say there is evidence in some instances that some reporters may have told government officials -- not the other way around -- that Wilson was married to Plame, a CIA employee."

She also revealed that colleagues of Matt Cooper, the Time who may be sent to jail Wednesday if he continues to refuse to testify to a grand jury, say "he is still struggling with his decision. For practical purposes, he cannot protect his sources because his publication has already turned over notes that identify them. But if Cooper cooperates, friends say, he fears his journalistic reputation will be tarnished. Time editors have told him they will respect whatever decision he makes, they said."

Leonnig also observed that at a lunch meeting on Tuesday with Washington Post reporters and editors, Karl Rove, who turned up as a source in Cooper's notes, declined to answer questions about the Plame case.

This is hilarious -- you couldn't write a better ending to the story then to have the press be the leakers. How are they going to spin that one?

It just makes the most sense to me. After all they begged for privacy and claimed great danger for themselves......then ran out to do photo shoots.

Lot of people here could have told the Wash Post that a year ago, given the leaks about the investigation. I think Miller might be the first person to have told Scooter Libby.

I posted just this evening ........... "Nah. In my mind the person they are protecting is one of their own."

I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this. Just look at the fact they had an opportunity to burn Bush in the election if it was Rove and they didn't so ......... going to jail for Rove if indeed this 'outing' was a crime? Highly unlikely. Well not likely PERIOD!

declaring Wednesday an "historic" day

Hey, Editor and Publisher. We are Americans (even if I personally lapse into British spellings a lot). We are most definitely not Cockneys. We do not drop our aitches.

Repeat after me, snob: "a historic." "A historic." There ya go.

"The leaker is ... Karl Rove!! This just shows how evil and unethical the Bush Admin is and how they will stop at nothing to weaken our ... hang on. I've just been handed a newsflash. Turns out the actual leaker is Katie Couric. Well. Ah ... Ah ... Ummm ... Katie has always been a bold journalist, always willing to do go the exta mile to uncover a great story. We salute her!"

It's Karl Rove, duh. Larry O'Donnell guessed that, so it must be true. </scarcasm>

"This is hilarious -- you couldn't write a better ending to the story then to have the press be the leakers."

I'll give it a shot: The so-called "leakers" told Novak, etc. that Wilson's wife, by maiden name or not, was connected to the story not to harm Wilson's ego, but to make the story they told seem more important. The leakers were anti-Bush types. Then the reporters told the "White House" officials about it, eg., Libby.

The reporters who did not hear the wife story from the leakers heard it from other reporters like Miller and Cooper.

There's still a George Tenet revenge plot possibility, but I'm sticking with a comedic end.

George Bush MADE them do it!

It's just hilarious how the MSM goes back to these complete nothing stories when they have nothing current for Bush-bashing purposes. Such juveniles.

It is absolutely inconceivable that the self-promoting, narcissistic showboater Joe Wilson could keep his wife's employment a secret from his good pals in the Beltway press.

I would presume he's been telling them for years.
