Sacramento Says Goodbye to Janice Rogers Brown - (Editor Emeritus describes church "Farewell")

Members of the Cordova Church of Christ in Rancho Cordova, California, said goodbye to members Janice Rogers Brown and her husband, Dewey Parker, on Sunday, July 3, before their departure this week for Washington, D.C.

The Parkers were honored by minister Chris Goldman and the elders of the 700-member congregation, on the couple's last Sunday at the church where she had been a member for more than 20 years. The shy and modest jurist was presented with a huge bouquet, and given hearty applause and a standing ovation which brought tears to the eyes of many members.

Janice Rogers Brown (who uses her professional name as well as her married name) and her husband, a professional musician, left this week for Washington, where Janice will begin her work as a judge on the U.S. appeals court for the District of Columbia Circuit. The former justice of the California Supreme Court was appointed to the federal court by President Bush, but was filibustered for many months by the Democrats in the U.S. Senate.

Chris Goldman noted that Janice and her husband were especially loved and admired by members of the congregation, and would be greatly missed. Janice had often taught Bible classes, and had even spoken this Sunday for a women's class on the subject "Managing Your Spiritual Life." Dewey often served as the congregation's news announcer, and he entertained each year at the "Sweetheart Banquet." Janice's mother and sister are also members of this congregation, as was Janice's late husband, Allen Brown, and their son, Nathan.

Although she would be arriving to begin her work on the D.C. federal court, the press and the Internet were rife with speculation that President Bush might also nominate Brown to fill the recent vacancy on the Supreme Court created by the retirement of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Janice Brown was born in rural Alabama, and when a teenager moved to Sacramento where she graduated from California State University at Sacramento. She received her law degree from UCLA, and served in increasingly important legal positions under both Governor George Deukmejian and Governor Pete Wilson, before being appointed by Gov. Wilson to the California Supreme Court.

That's very close to where I live. I wish I'd have known, I would have gone to wish her well.

Presumably this church is NOT affiliated with the misnamed "United Church of Christ."
