BLAST AT CITY TUBE STATION - FOUR BOMB EXPLOSIONS AROUND LONDON
Sky News ^ | July 7, 2005

Posted on 07/07/2005 1:45:13 AM PDT by RWR8189

There has been an explosion at Aldgate East underground station in London, causing the closure of the entire Tube network.

There are also reports that a second incident took place at Edgware Road station in north west London.

The Aldgate East blast was caused by "some kind of power surge", according to Tube infrastructure company Metronet, which is responsible for maintaining the Metropolitan line.

A spokesman said: "We don't know the extent of the problem yet."

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We have just sent some resources out to the scene."

British Transport Police confirmed that there are "walking wounded" and said paramedics have responded to one report of a person classed as "life at risk".

"It's chaos, with people trying to work out what has happened," said a spokesman.

"All we know at the moment is that staff reported a loud bang at 8.49am. No one is sure what caused an explosion, but it is thought it could have been a collision, a power cut, or a power cable problem."

One witness said the packed underground train he was on was 200 metres from Kings Cross when there was a huge flash.

The train stopped and people were using umberellas to smash windows of the trains. Passengers were led out of the train by underground staff.

He added people were milling around Kings Cross covered in soot.

Subways, London -- does not mean subways here -- think above ground trains... maybe buses.

MadIvan,

From this side of the pond, I have to wonder what the fallout is going to be like around London. I'm assuming there will be a considerable number of arrests. Given the skyrocketing Muslim population, I would be concerned that this will spawn either copycat attacks or retaliatory attacks for coming arrests. It seems the Muslim population (and I'm sorry to generalize) in London is a giant sleeper cell of sorts. What's your take on how this will affect the Muslim pop.?

Add Saudi to that list (especially a pair of Saudi cities).

Off topic a bit, but sister-in-law lived in UK for a year. Prior to going, her huisband's company had a class on social customs and habits. It had a "translation list" and a list of what NOT to say.

"Fannie" (as in butt) was on the bad word list.

"Smartfannie" just does not do it like "smartass" LOL!

The poster posted what DEBKA said. Do not be arrogant or a know it all. Please post civilly! Here is what Debka said on two subjects which ARE connected. I had the report from sa friend in AUSTRIA as well: " G8 leaders gather in Scotland for Gleneagles summit on climate and African aid Protesters march on heavily guarded G8 hotel

Al Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the London Transport bombing attacks “in revenge for Britain’s participation in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars." July 7, 2005, 2:34 PM (GMT+02:00)"

I'm not sure if all the internet connections are working. I was fortunate to get through before the news had even hit the tv, here in the states. Thanks to the poster from London. I told my son to go back to the school (he's doing an internship through Arizona State)and email me. But I haven't heard from him, yet.

It just so happened that I couldn't sleep and turned on the computer just as the post came up.

If there is any saving grace to this horrible episode, it is that we will be spared further stories about bad food for prisoners at Gitmo, and Korans that are stuffed in a toilet, or burned..

Report: Islamic group makes claim of responsibility for London blasts
The Associated Press, July 7, 2005

CAIRO, Egypt

A group calling itself "The Secret Organization of al-Qaida in Europe" has posted a claim of responsibility for Thursday's series of blasts in London, saying they were in retaliation for Britain's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The statement, which also threatened attacks in Italy and Denmark, was published on a Web site popular with Islamic militants, according to Elaph, a secular Arabic-language news Web site, and Der Spiegel magazine in Berlin, which both published the text on their Web sites.

Frankly I'm surprised we haven't had a few bombers here ourselves since 9/11.

Thank John Ashcroft and the Patriot Act.
