FReep the "Gang of Seven"!

Sen. Schumer declared war on President Bush's nominees to replace the retiring Justice O'Conner. That being the case, I think FReepers can fire the opening volley by writing the seven McCain Mutineers and demanding they publicly support President Bush now that the Democrats have reneged on the deal.

A suggested format:

Senator __________,

A short time ago, you and six of your Republican colleagues made a deal with Democrats in which you promised not to support any changes to Senate filibuster rules and they promised not to support filibusters against any more of President Bush's judicial nominees. Upon the announcement by Justice Sandra Day O'Conner of her pending retirement from the Supreme Court, Senate Democrats have openly declared their intention to filibuster any conservative nominee to replace her, effectively breaking their word.

I am calling on you to keep your word and support your fellow Republicans in the Senate, President Bush, the Constitution of the United States and, most importantly, those who elected you to office. I am asking you and the other six Republicans who made this deal to either issue a press release or hold a press conference with the major media outlets in which you publicly and unequivocally state that conservative views do NOT constitute an "extreme circumstance." Furthermore, should the Democrats break their word and filibuster ANY nominee, you will wholeheartedly and unreservedly support any and all changes to Senate filibuster rules, including the so-called "nuclear option."

The Democrats broke their word. Can you keep yours?

To find out how to contact each Senator, go to www.senate.gov and click on the "Senators" button. There will be a drop-down list allowing you to choose Senators by last name to display contact information. NOTE: Be respectful. Don't act like Democrats.

The McCain Mutineers:

I should also point out that Chafee, Snowe and DeWine are all up for re-election in 2006, along with Democrat Senators Nelson (NE) and Byrd (WV), who were also part of the deal and represent states that voted for President Bush in the last election. FReepers might want to drop them a line, too.

TOPICS: Your Opinion/Questions
KEYWORDS: chafee; collins; dewine; filibuster; graham; mccain; nominees; scotus; snowe; supremecourt; warner
Don't know if it will do any good, but have at 'em.

Was Chuckie a member of the 14?

No, he wasn't. However, Senator Lieberman, who was, is already on the record stating conservative views equates to "extraordinary circumstances."

PREDICTION: The media will begin running polls such as "Should extreme views of a judicial nominee be considered 'extraordinary circumstances'?"

Frankly, I think Gonzalez either a)got on the wrong side of someone important in the White House or, b)lost a lot or erstwhile supporters when he basically withdrew himself from consideration.

It is amazing someone previously so staunchly supported is now ttreated by conservatives as the second coming of David Souter.

"I should also point out that Chafee, Snowe and DeWine are all up for re-election in 2006"

I think we should start cranking up the Draft US Congressman Kassich campaign now---to Dump DeWine. If he starts backpedalling so rapidly he changes our mind, so much the better.

Letter writing is great,...and I highly recommend it, but winging one of these RINOs would send the ultimate message.DeWine is the most vulnerable of those coming up in '06. We should support his challenger.
