New New York City was on heightened alert Thursday morning following a series of apparent terrorist attacks on London's public transit system.
Increased police coverage of subways, buses and transit stations was ordered throughout the city.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly was meeting with police officials and executed other security plans, a law enforcement source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press.
"We cannot live in fear. The greatest way to deter terrorism is to continue with our way of life," Gov. George Pataki said on WNYW-Fox 5 News. "Let the police deal with security and be alert.
Report any suspicions but continue to enjoy the greatest society the world ever created."
An executive order signed by Pataki allows Connecticut and New Jersey law enforcers to ride on New York mass transit, including Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North and PATH trains, said Pataki spokesman Dave Catalfano.

Didn't see anything on the PATH. Everything normal, no police presence, no announcements.
I think this is just happening so fast, that it is just now getting in motion.
Glad you still have your sense of humor. Whoa!
I think that if we had gotten the Olympics yesterday we would be seing these pictures from Penn Station and Times Square. The terrorists are here. I've got a feeling something still will happen here in the next few hours, say P.M. Rush Hour.
Hope they are monitoring the train system around Washington DC....
I don't think this is about the Olympics at all, time will tell though.
rabidralph..thank you for that number, I am sure that many are looking for that information, if they have family there. My Niece and friend , left London Yesterday to head back to the States, Had to call my Mom just to make sure she was home.
You're welcome. I just heard the number given on the radio. Prayers for all the victims and their loved ones and I'm happy to hear your neice and her friend are home.
This had NOTHING whatsoever to do with the olympics. This had been planned for months to coincide with the G8 meeting. Just my opinion...
