NEWSWEEK: Matt Cooper's Source
Newsweek ^ | July 18 issue | Michael Isikoff

Posted on 07/10/2005 12:12:27 AM PDT by West Coast Conservative

It was 11:07 on a Friday morning, July 11, 2003, and Time magazine correspondent Matt Cooper was tapping out an e-mail to his bureau chief, Michael Duffy. "Subject: Rove/P&C," (for personal and confidential), Cooper began. "Spoke to Rove on double super secret background for about two mins before he went on vacation..." Cooper proceeded to spell out some guidance on a story that was beginning to roil Washington. He finished, "please don't source this to rove or even WH [White House]" and suggested another reporter check with the CIA.

Last week, after Time turned over that e-mail, among other notes and e-mails, Cooper agreed to testify before a grand jury in the Valerie Plame case. Explaining that he had obtained last-minute "personal consent" from his source, Cooper was able to avoid a jail sentence for contempt of court. Another reporter, Judith Miller of The New York Times, refused to identify her source and chose to go to jail instead.

For two years, a federal prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, has been investigating the leak of Plame's identity as an undercover CIA agent. The leak was first reported by columnist Robert Novak on July 14, 2003. Novak apparently made some arrangement with the prosecutor, but Fitzgerald continued to press other reporters for their sources, possibly to show a pattern (to prove intent) or to make a perjury case. (It is illegal to knowingly identify an undercover CIA officer.) Rove's words on the Plame case have always been carefully chosen. "I didn't know her name. I didn't leak her name," Rove told CNN last year when asked if he had anything to do with the Plame leak. Rove has never publicly acknowledged talking to any reporter about former ambassador Joseph Wilson and his wife.

From the headline, I thought Rove was toast. But that's clearly not the case. Isikoff doesn't even tell us who called who. Maybe it doesn't matter if Rove called Cooper because Rove's obvious intent was to set Cooper straight on Cheney's non-existent role in sending Wilson to Niger.

"Nothing in the Cooper e-mail suggests that Rove used Plame's name or knew she was a covert operative. (From Isikoff's mouth to the prosecutor's ear.)

"A fair reading of the e-mail makes clear that the information conveyed was not part of an organized effort to disclose Plame's identity, but was an effort to discourage Time from publishing things that turned out to be false," the source said, referring to claims in circulation at the time that Cheney and high-level CIA officials arranged for Wilson's trip to Africa"(There you have it...."nothing" wrapped up neatly by Isikoff)

Busy, enjoying life, not hiding from the police...uh, not hiding from the jack booted thugs I mean, not loosing sleep over President Bush's Supreme Court picks, not listening to Michael Moore or his alter ego ChurchillStuff...you know, weird stuff.

I'm on a mini-vacation so I thought I'd drop by and see how things haven't really changed.

So how are you doing? Still sane.

"Spoke to Rove on double super secret background for about two mins before he went on vacation..."

This line and this article is a classic example of what many call "bullshit".

It actually sounds exactly like something a reporter would write. There's a long standing tradition of irreverence in journalism.

I smell a liberal troll here. He just registered today, and his words sound like some lefty's imitation of what he thinks a right winger is supposed to sound like. Anyone who really had a habit of "kicking liberal ass on the lefty boards" would have been registered here a long time ago.

Don't we wish the media were as diligent in searching for other information, like Hillary's college thesis or Kerry's military record

Very true. Maybe they could work on looking into Jayna Davis' work on OKC or the wherabouts of the very interesting Carol Howe............ or the reality of Flight 800 or..........Jamie Gorelick and her 'Wall', etc., etc., etc.

"double super secret background"

Don't forget, Cooper moonlights as a stand-up comedian in his spare time.

Nothing in the Cooper e-mail suggests that Rove used Plame's name or knew she was a covert operative.

This whole story is nothing but a rehash. The tale will be told when Mr. Mandy Grunwald testifies and if he tells the truth (big "if"). The way I read it, Rove pointed Miller in Plame's direction and Miller took it from there. Somebody else gave him Plame's name and background as a CIA seret agent.

Vicksburg, - high on the bluff overlooking the Mississippi. I'm taking the one way tciket on Thusrday mornring. Good bye and good riddance CA...lol.

Reguarding this stilly case, I think Miller leaked to Novak, who told Rove and Rove told Cooper and now Miller can't up and admit that she started the whole thang, so off to jail she goes. It's late, maybe I left out a link or two. Old Joe might have bragged about his wife's employment.

I'm pretty sure about one point: neither Miller or Cooper would have gone to the wall to protect a valid GOP source like Rove....lol.

Wilson obviously isn't worried about stalkers and such. He wrote a book, has authored many columns, and consented to many magazine interviews, some with photos of him and his wife. He seems to relish his new found celebrity, and he's certainly profiting from it. Another big spread is coming out this month, oh and by the way, Valerie Plame still works for the CIA.
