The Democracy Corps -- run by three veteran political consultants, James Carville, Robert Shrum and Stan Greenberg -- offered a mixture of good and bad news for the Democratic Party last week.
In essence, their interpretation of their own latest polling data is that the Republicans are ripe for the taking -- but the vagueness of the Democratic alternative is limiting the prospects for a major comeback.
Although they do not make the point, their findings illuminate the most striking failure of the Democratic National Committee under the chairmanship of Howard Dean -- the reluctance to create the kind of policy arm that has rescued the party from similar doldrums past.
What the Democracy Corps trio reported is that each of their last three monthly surveys has found that likely voters, by 55 percent to 41 percent, say they hope to see the country move in a significantly different direction from the one President Bush has set. The survey indicates that the principal reasons for voters' disillusionment -- these numbers are far worse than a year ago -- are concern about the Iraq war, worries about pensions and Social Security, anxiety about jobs and incomes, and the cost of health care.
All these offer tempting targets for a Democratic campaign. "But for all that," the Democracy Corps memo says, "Democrats are at risk of making only modest gains in 2006. . . . The president's deep troubles have produced no rise in positive sentiment about the Democrats." To achieve their potential, the memo concludes, "they must pose sharp choices -- ones that define the Democrats, not just the Republicans."

Dean and his staff have been collecting ideas from disgruntled hateful DUers and Move-On members who have nothing else in mind but impeachment and hate. That is exactly where he and his staff are getting their ideas from. Whenever a DU spews his venom the DNC spews the EXACT same thing. The Dem congressmen and Senators have a really pathetic habit of quoting from Newpaper articles (as if the American people really want their leaders to be guided by the newspapers)and also the rhetoric that the DUers and Move-On people rant about in their e-mails to them.
Au contraire! They have tons of policy positions.
The problem is Democrats cannot state their policy positions because most Americans disagree with them.
Democrats nationally need to buy a clue. But--oh that right, they have little-to-no money in the DNC coffers thanks to Howl'in Howey. Maybe the Flordia Democratic Party can bail them out financially.
They have stances: sodomy, infanticide, tax hikes, appeasement, to name a few, all laced with anti -Americanism.
I disagree.
...with them.
"Republicans are ripe for the taking "
Unfortunately, I agree. Put on your tin foil hat, I'm going to throw a conspiracy on the table:
Dean is ineffective therefore, damaging most dems. However, we've seen the Clintons have the ability to structure themselves apart from the DNC. Dean being head of the DNC is actually a benefit to Hillary.
I've seen the ads for the new series about a woman president, HRC anyone? That's the MSM doing their best to pave the way for Hillary.
If the Bush administration doesn't make some progress, HRC will be on the inside track to be POTUS.
This doesn't necessarily mean they're going to vote for Dems. My guess is that half of the 55 percent are here reading FR. I'm definitely in that group.
The problem is Democrats cannot state their policy positions because most Americans disagree with them.

Of course -- and that is why the Kerry campaign (if you can call it that)...was so EMPTY. No policy (EXCEPT RAISING YOUR TAXES), no plan, no vision, no purpose, nothing for America except hate, obstruction and criticism. And they think people cannot figure that out -- GOOD! Let them keep their present modus operandi -- and die! Would be GREAT for the USA!!!
Dean can't even figure out what the Democrats stand for. That's why he has his staff trying to find out.
They should just read FR for a few days and they would find out exactly what Democrats stand for.
"The survey indicates that the principal reasons for voters' disillusionment -- these numbers are far worse than a year ago -- are concern about the Iraq war, worries about pensions and Social Security, anxiety about jobs and incomes, and the cost of health care."
Maybe the democrats do not have a clear policy or stance on the issues facing our country today, but this illustrates to me that the President has not made it clear enough to the public that we are winning the war on terror (in Afghanistan and Iraq). It also shows that too many Americans don't realize that the jobless rate is only 5% and the economy has been growing steadily under the President's watch. They also do not understand the social security crisis and that the democrats, who clearly understand that there is a crisis, obstruct all of the President's attempts to fix the ailing social security system while offering no viable alternatives of their own. I think that the President and his top officials need to start hammering these facts home and on a regular basis.
Take it to the people much like they did on the 2004 campaign trail where President Bush is greeted with near rock star status. The Republicans have to go in for the kill so the public learns the truth.
The extremely insignificant wrong direction, right direction above is what the liberals pundits have repeated thousands of times in 2004 believing that they are going to win the elections because majority of polled believe that the country is on the wrong track. They were so sure of their victory because they so much believed that wrong track, right track crap, but at the end they were utterly defeated. They are doing the same thing again, and these are supposedly the brightest strategists of the Democrat party. I am glad that liberals are our political opponents, they are too stupid to win.
Hillary Clinton is an extreme liberal and no matter what she does she cannot hide her spots. Do you remember all the flip flops of John Kerry and how he tried to move to the right and hide his liberal record, guess what the majority of American people did not believe him and he was crushed together with his miserable party in the 2004 elections. The same thing will happen to Hillary Clinton no matter what she does, the majority of voters will see her as who she really is, a flaming liberal. The majority of voters will realize that Hillary Clinton is a fake person, fake character, fake smile, fake attitude, etc If you think that one of Kerry major problem were his flip flops then Hillary Clinton attempt on faking who she really is will make Kerry flip flops a tiny problem.
The majority of the American voters are not ready yet for a woman President and they will not trust yet a woman to protect their lives. Women in particular will have a problem with Hillary Clinton because they do not feel secure with a woman President in charge of protect them and the life of their families. Moreover she does will not only have problem with majority of married and mature women but also with a substantial number of young and single liberal women. Many liberal women consider her a political B**** because she stayed with Bill Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal and she defended him. I am not saying that majority of the liberal women will be against her but it will be minority large enough to kill any chance she has to win the women vote, and hence not chance to win the Presidency. Of course the men vote will be 70% to 30% against her.
Moreover the majority of American will realize that she is a nasty and a mean person. When she is cornered Hillary Clinton will show her ugly and disgusting nastiness and meanness that will turn off the majority of voters, in particular women voters, and man will call her a B****. Few want to elect a B**** for President.
If we thought that Kerry has non-charismatic dry personality, Hillary Clinton will make look like the ultimate motivation speech person and will make look like Cicero. Have you heard give an Passionate speech? If you did not you should because we will be laughing for at least tow hours after you hear her screeching voice and how she runs out of breath. She is a simply a clown when it comes to political speeches, and Jay Leno will be have an ocean of comedy materials about her Campaign stops, events, and speeches.
You may make the dumb argument that the media will protect her and we will not see anything about her problems? Really, as if they did not try to protect Kerry. One of the most important lessons we learned in 2004 that the media cannot make anyone win an election no matter what. After the 2004 election it is not called anymore the MSM, main stream media, it is called DLM, defeated liberal media.
Quote; "In essence, their interpretation of their own latest polling data is that the Republicans are ripe for the taking. . . ."
Aside from the fact that the Martian always thinks that the Republicans are ripe for the taking, Carville acknowledges that the democrats can't take back power without any ideas and proposals of their own. This begs the simple question: how exactly are the Republicans "ripe for the taking" if the democrats can't take them?
Where besides immigration and spending are the Republicans weak? Given those two areas of weakness, are the democrats really going to try and sell the voters that they are tough on immigration and are deficit hawks. The democrats don't think we are letting in enough illegals and aren't spending enough money.
Earth to Martian, Earth to Martian. . .the anti-war platform is not ever ever ever going to work, no matter how much you try to dress it up and teach it a new dance.
Your link just brings me to a Photo bucket page.
