Paris city hall will not honour Scientologist Cruise

Tue Jul 12, 7:42 AM ET

The Paris city hall has pledged not to make US actor Tom Cruise an honorary citizen because of his membership of the Church of Scientology.

In a debate late Monday, the Socialist-controlled municipal assembly approved a resolution "never to welcome the actor Tom Cruise, spokesman for Scientology and self-declared militant for this organisation."

Last month on a promotional tour for his film "War of the Worlds," the 43-year-old star chose the Eiffel Tower to propose to girlfriend Katie Holmes. He was also made an honorary citizen of the southern French city of Marseille.

Like many other European governments, the French authorities view Scientology -- founded in the United States in 1954 by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard -- as a dangerous cult.

Cruise was described as a "sect-symbol" by a Socialist deputy.

First Oprah, then Tom. The French do have their good side.

Scientology is dangerous only in that it offends Pychiatrists who peddle chemical imbalances everywhere they go.

You really need to do more research before making such statements. This is how Scientologists deal with mental health issues.

On December 5, 1995, Lisa McPherson was dead on arrival at a hospital 45 minutes north of Clearwater Florida. According to the coroner's report, Lisa was underweight, severely dehydrated, and had bruises and bug bites.

Lisa's last address was listed by the police as 210 S. Ft. Harrison in Clearwater Florida, which is the Fort Harrison Hotel, a Scientology property. Lisa had been a Scientologist from the age of 18 to her death at age 36.

Lisa was put on the Introspection Rundown that Scientology uses to handle those who have had a psychotic break.

On November 18, 1995, Lisa was involved in a minor car accident. She was apparently not hurt, but she got out of her car and took all her clothes off and seemed mentally unstable. She was taken to a hospital where she was physically evaluated as being unharmed, but the hospital wanted her to be psychologically cared for. However, some Scientologists arrived and stated that Lisa did not believe in psychiatry, and she checked out after a short evaluation and left with the Scientologists. She went with them to the Ft. Harrison Hotel for "rest and relaxation" according to the church, but church logs from Lisa's stay there from November 18 to her death December 5 show differently. Some logs are missing, and a high ranking ex-Scientologist has written an affidavit in which he claims that the church has in the past destroyed documents that might get the church in trouble.

This is a parody of little Tommy that I came across from The Spoof! site:

New York - Tom Cruise, who clashed with Today show host Matt Lauer on Friday when Lauer brought up Cruise's earlier criticism of Brooke Shields for taking anti-depressants, issued an apology today for his belligerent behavior from Hollywood.

According to his publicist, Mr. Cruise failed to take his prescribed dose of Ritalin that morning and, as a result, was "a tiny bit on the edge."

"Tom is doing fine now," publicist/sister/fellow Scientologist, Lee Ann Devett explained to reporters. "Between his new bride's constant need for attention and being sprayed in the face with water last week at the London premiere of his new movie, it's more important than ever that he sticks to his strict regiment of exercise, vitamins, and Scientology. You see, Tom has a very fragile psyche," she continued. "When he goes off the vitamins, especially the Ritalin, he can be quite unpredictable."

Unpredictable indeed. Cruise went on the defensive during the Today show interview with Matt Lauer last week, accusing him of "knowing nothing about psychiatry." When Lauer pushed the issue, Cruise leaned toward him aggressively, stating "I've studied the history of psychiatry, Matt, and you haven't." He added, "I had to memorize the entire script of Rain Man once. Have you ever memorized a script about a savant, Matt? Well, have you Matt? "

Lauer's every attempt to refocus the star was met with further aggression. When Lauer asked about his new movie, War of The Worlds,Cruise responded, "You don't know anything about Martians, do you,Matt? I know about Martians. My first wife was a Martin. Have you ever been married to a Martian, Matt?"

"I was waiting for him to punch me," Lauer later said to an unnamed Today show insider. "The guy was out there, man. I mean, I've interviewed some nuts before, but holy crap."

This is the second incident of bizarre behavior involving Cruise and interviewers in recent weeks. While on the Oprah Winfrey show recently,Winfrey's personal security forces went on high alert as Cruise stood on her couch and raved wildly about himself.

"I came this close to taking the dude out," Rocky Lee Brown,Winfrey's chief security aide told reporters. "Nobody messes with Oprah on my watch...Nobody."

Ms. Winfrey herself had no comment regarding the incident.

Cruise's scheduled appearance on Dr. Phil next week has been cancelled.

Now, if they will just support us in the war in Iraq, they might just redeem themselves.

John Travolta is a Scientologist. I just can't grasp that. He seems like he would be more intelligent than that. Years ago, when he was young, he was in a relationship with an older actress who died of cancer. He stayed with her until the end. She was a beautiful woman, I think her name was Diana Highland. Am I correct, anyone?

Obviously you have never had to deal with major depressive disorder. That is quite different from feeling bad because of a relationship, etc.

I have suffered from a major depressive/anxiety disorder since 1995. I was working too long and too hard. I had teenagers who were in crisis from time to time. However, that is not happening now. I am on medication which needs to be changed from time to time as one won't work forever. I can't control the times when I spiral down. I wish that I could. However, if it were not for the medication and the excellent treatment by my psychiatrist, I would be dead now. Instead, I am able to function pretty well most of the time. I managed to nurse my husband for the 2 1/2 years he fought cancer until he died.

I know I have a chemical imbalance because, without the meds, I go into a deep black hole and can't function at all. I have had to have ECT treatments to help with the chemical imbalance. They do work.

So, don't talk about something that you have no earthly idea about. Walk in our shoes for a few months and see how it feels before you judge us.

God bless you. I hope you are doing well now. I am, too. Some people are ignorant of mental illness, but it is not right for them to judge what they know nothing about in such harsh terms.

It is.

Travolta is rather quiet about Scientology. Cruise sounds as if he's coming unglued. Wonder if Cruise will end up getting the "Lisa McPherson" treatment.

I don't know what they will do with Cruise, but he needs help. It is really sad to see someone who had such promise go to pieces like that.

Yes their nut cases and most times just plain stupid.

However they can spot another fake like them miles off.

Like 5,000 miles off in Hollyweird, USA.

He's not doing their cult any good. I'd hazard a guess and say they'll try to muzzle him. Cults don't normally like being in the spotlight.

Yeah, I think you are right. I wonder if that is the reason he and Nicole were divorced. Maybe she did not buy into his "religion."

I wonder how many Hollywood types are in this cult? I wonder what it has that they want or lack?

"How ever did they control their children and their depressions?
They locked them away in attics, prisons or asylums"

Many people, especially young people with untreated depression commit suicide.

Scientology is a cult. They are dangerous. To discourage people with mental illness from seeking help, or from taking medication is reprehensible.
