Group calls for health warnings on soft drinks

A U.S. consumer group Wednesday called for cigarette-style warnings on soft drinks to alert consumers that too much of the sugary beverages can make them fat and cause other health problems. People who overindulge in soft drinks are also more likely to develop diabetes and have decaying teeth, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) said in a petition to the Food and Drug Administration.

The warnings are especially necessary to help counter the growing number of youth who drink soda, said the center, which has previously put out reports publicizing the health-threatening qualities of other popular foods such as ice cream and movie popcorn.

“Parents and health officials need to recognize soft drinks for what they are — liquid candy — and do everything they can to return those beverages to their former role as an occasional treat,” CSPI officials wrote in a related report.

Studies show teenage boys drink about 1.5 cans of soda a day on average compared to 1 can for teenage girls, according to the group.

Some suggested warnings included: “To help protect your waistline and your teeth, consider switching to diet sodas or water” and “Drinking too many (non-diet) soft drinks contributes to weight gain.”

And in other news, standing in the sun can make you hot. Later, we'll cover how water can make you wet.

Are there really people who are unable to figure this out on their own?

Wasn't their a guy who sued McDonalds for not telling him what would happen if he ate their food daily? I think the answer is yes, some people can't figure this out on their own.

I'm always amazed at people who say they never drink water. Water should always be the primary liqued someone takes in.

We need warning labels on "consumer groups"!

To help protect your intellect, consider not participating in the nanny state” and “relying on junk science contributes to stupidy".

Softdrinks are a hundred years old. They are not even slightly bad for you, no more than any other food.

Can we get a warning label on Al Sharpton?

Only if he's edible.

After saying that, I gotta go brush my teeth.

Like my girlfriend said when watching an interview with a rabid anti-smoking activist on "Penn & Teller's BULL$H*T!":

"NANNY! NANNY! Come and save us children from ourselves!"

I'd like to put a boot in the a$$ of every nanny-state-advocating activist in the country, because it will be people like them, and not any invading army, who will end up destroying liberty in the United States if they are not stopped and put in their place.

Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI)

Anytime you see CSPI in an article, send up a red flag. The CSPI are the wackos who complain about Mexican food, theater popcorn, potato chips, etc.

Personally, I can't stand carbonated beverages. This, however, is ridiculous. How about just slapping a warning on all food items?

Caution: consuming too many calories will make you fat!

WARNING: There is stuff in life that will hurt you.

The Sun is hot; don't eat it, or stare at it for any time at all. Knives are sharp. Heavy objects can fall on your foot and hurt you. Too much food of any kind can make you fat. Objects in rear-view mirror are closer than they appear. Alcohol makes women appear more attractive than they really are. Putting your face in a wood chipper is a "bad idea." Lawnmowers are NOT for trimming hedges, no matter how drunk you are. The top surface of a ladder is NOT a step. Driving faster than you can see will probably kill you. Smoking puts smoke in your lungs, which even an idiot should know probably isn't in the original design specs, and as early as the 1920's they called them "coffin nails" so, duh, they are probably bad for you, but you smoke them anyway, so don't blame the people who made them.

Democrats will claim to be your friends, but behind your back, they think you are the kind of moron who can't be trusted to run your own life without direct government intervention, and they most likely believe you couldn't pour out a boot full of warm spit if the instructions were printed on the heel. And if you fail to elect them because you disagree with them on important political points, they think it is just because they "failed to get their message across", because, you pea-brained idiot from the Midwest, if you just understood how much more intelligent their hair-brained, intolerant, touchy-feely, squishy, Leftist rantings were, you'd vote for them in an instant. (You however can't be trusted to handle democracy, so if they should happen to be voted out of power, it must be because the President is at once a complete moron and the craftiest liar ever born. And he surrounds himself with people who share his political views and won't pay any attention to those he disagrees with, and anyway the French are so much more advanced than us we shouldn't even be allowed to let our armed forces carry pointed sticks, it's so unfair how we win wars by force!)

“To help protect your waistline and your teeth, consider switching to diet sodas or water”

I've heard health care professionals say that it is better to drink the sugary sodas than the diet crap.

So, after cigar and alcohol, will soft drinks be banned from the market?

Probably. It's fattening. It's rich in fat, so it's a factor in heart disease and it's rich in lactose, so it can can health problems in lactose intolerant people.

I wish I was joking, but I can see these people doing it.
