Didn't see this posted. This is a series of reports critical of Zell Miller by a local TV reporter being aired over several days. He keeps telling us "Carter wouldn't have done it". The question seems to be whether the governor's mansion upkeep funds are part of the governors compensation package.

Miller declined requests for an interview, but acknowledges that he kept the money.

"When I retired from state government, I received only what I was advised was legal, ethical and traditional," he said in a statement sent to Channel 2 Action News. "I would never, ever knowingly have done anything else.

Upon taking office, we were told that the mansion fund was our's to use as we chose: Use it up or live cheaply and pay personal taxes on what was left. We chose the latter."

Crockett agrees.

"Oh of course," he said. "Of course."

When asked, both Carter, a Republican, and Perdue, a Republican, said they did not and do not view the mansion money as personal compensation.

"No one has notified us to this day that what we did with the mansion fund was improper," Miller said.

When asked if he planned to repay the money, his attorney said, "If the state tells us there was a mistake, Sen. Miller is going to do whatever it takes to correct the mistake."

Carter was a Republican? Since when?

We have slobberers here for Jimmy Carter and they rag on Zell because he supported Bush. I really don't care what Carter would have done. What about Joe Frank Harris? Why don't we find out what JFH would done??

It's about making Jimmy Carter out to be some sort of God here (because of his homeless thing) and Zell out to be an evil secret republican.

....He cites the attorney general's opion from 1969 which reads, "Amounts paid to state officials for expenses are part of such officials' gross income and, in my opinion, are taxable to the extent that they are not used for such official business."

There you have it.

Damn, I really need to start reading the AJC or watch local news from time to time. We all knew it was a matter of time. They (generic "they") tried to go after him before the election, but could find no takers.

This reporter neglected to give us the full story. You can't make a real comparison until you know how much money was left in the kitty at the end of each governor's term, and what exactly it was spent on.

If it turns out that Carter and the other Democrats used up their funds throwing a few parties for their union buddies, environmentalist buddies, lobbyist buddies, assorted relatives, etc., then I would say Zell should be congratulated for not wasting his funds.

I wonder how long the democrats have been hunting for something to use against Miller before they concocted this.

Former Governor Walters (D) of Oklahoma stole a bunch of furniture from the Governor's mansion and got away with it.

I remember hearing this story on the radio yesterday, and the very first thing I thought, was "Wow, the 'Rats had to sink THAT low to find something on Zell?"

The charges didn't even matter. I knew that what ever it was that Zell did was being blown out of proportion. It's not blind faith in the man, by any means, but a matter of the transparency of the attack.

"Last night, Senator Hillary Clinton hosted her first party in her new home in Washington. People said it was a lot like the parties she used to host at the White House. In fact, even the furniture was the same." - — Jay Leno

Ask Jimmy Carter why the state had to replace all of the gold on the capitol dome when he left office. It all seemed to just disappear when he decided to run for president.
