A team of Senate and House Democrats today are planning to introduce legislation today aimed at significantly increasing size of the U.S. Army.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.), ranking member of the Senate Armed Services (SASC) airland subcommittee, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), a SASC member, and Reps. Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.) and Mark Udall (D-Colo.), both members of the House Armed Services committee, are pressing for the passage of the United States Army Relief Act.

The legislation seeks to raise the cap of the Army’s end strength, said an aide to Tauscher.

It's times like this I wish I had a DU account. How does she expect to get these 80 thousand? She has to want a draft, that's the only thing I can figure out with these numbers.

Sadly, the GOP has left itself vulnerable on illegal immigration. And while her talk is just that -- empty rhetoric (why would she want to limit the number of future Dem voters, once they are amnestied), it may prove difficult for the GOP to persuade voters that they would do better after yrs of doing nothing, despite controlling most of the federal govt.

I am no fan of Hillary or of any Democrat that would side with her BUT all I see in this is an increase in congressional funding for the Army.

Why?
She having trouble finding soldiers to run over or pointedly disrespect?
The DOD requests increases in manning levels, not politicians.
I do hope the witch runs in 2008.
It would be the final death blow to big media and the Democrat party.

This is unbelievable. This is the same woman who said we no longer needed a standing army that could fight on two fronts. Anyone else remember her saying this? I wish I could remember what article it was. It came out around the same time that "60 Minutes" did a story on soldier being forced out or to retire long before they wanted to go.

We need to find the article and the transcripts from that "60 Minutes" story.

OMG!!! She wants a draft!

I don't think so. She wants a campaign issue, not a draft. Consider this:

Question: Mrs. Clinton, why did you support a bill to raise troops, which might cause a draft?

Answer: When I did that i was doing what I could to strengthen and support our troops. Remember, the past administration got us into the war and we were caught short handed... yada yada yada.

Question: So do you now support a draft?

Answer: My opponent wants to continue this quagmire, which necessitates a draft. I have a plan to end this war, bring our troops home and gain international support.... yada yada yada.

She wants it both ways.

Pure symbolism - Look where it got her husband and the 100,000 new cops and 10,000 new prosecutors initiative

Exactly. That's what ALL of the complaints by the "embedded generals" was about in the Iraq war---they desperately want to reinstitute the draft so that they can generate more opposition to the policies. Right now, there is a good comeback for anyone who opposes the war: screw you, you're not fighting it, nor do you have to. We'll do it for you.

Ithink her daughter's statement was "we loathe the military".

Perhaps she counted votes and came up a little short.
