'Cooter' Urges Fans to Skip 'Dukes' Movie

ATLANTA - If television's "Crazy Cooter" has his way, fans of the "Dukes of Hazzard" may be speeding away from a new movie version of the cornpone classic faster than the Duke boys running from Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane.

Ben Jones, a former Georgia congressman who played the wisecracking mechanic on the popular series from 1979-85, said profanity and sexual content in the film make a mockery of the family friendly show.

"Basically, they trashed our show," said Jones, who now lives in the mountains of Washington, Va. "It's one thing to do whatever movie they want to do, but to take a classic family show and do that is like taking "I Love Lucy" and making her a crackhead or something."

Jones said he read a script of the movie, which is scheduled to be released next month, and that it contained profanity, "constant sexual innuendo and some very clear sexual situations."

I find myself agreeing with Ben Jones. Hollywood shouldn't mess with a classic!

First Question: Why did they make this movie?

I saw an ad on a bus for the movie and I saw Luke wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt. I said to myself something is very wrong here. Since when do the good ol' Duke boys like Led Zeppelin?

Someone f***ed up. Should have been Lynard Skynard... LOL! Go figure. Hollywood is filled with a bunch of morons.

Cooter was never the same after he lost his beard (season 2?)

In on of the very early episodes, Sheriff Rosco P. Coletrane shoots and (if memory serves me correctly) kills a man. It wasn't until after the writers realized there was a large number of children watching the program that the Dukes of Hazzard became a "Family Friendly" program with A-Team style violence.

While "Cooter" is right that an icon shouldn't be remade into something vulgar, it wasn't the initial intent of the writers to make "Dukes" a wholesome romp through the backwoods.

I know I saw Led Zeppelin because it was that fallen Angel image from their LPs. They are morons...

Sounds like sour grapes that he didn't get a cameo.

Roscoe did shoot a crook early in the series, but didn't kill him. I think it was a leg wound. You are correct, however, about the creators rethinking the theme later and making the show more family-friendly. That's what gave the Dukes of Hazzard the legacy that it has. It's a shame that Hollyweird is abandoning that legacy to keep the nihilistic MTV crowd interested.

Calling Dukes of Hazard a 'classic family show' is a bit of a stretch, but I agree with the old cooter. Hollywood did the same thing with the Cat in the Hat. Made an insipid innuendo filled piece of drek.

I have not seen the movie. Was it filmed in the same location where they filmed the show"...... which looks nothing even remotely like the area in which it is supposed to be set.

Sounds that way to me too. You can't tell me that the TV series didn't have sexual innuendo with Daisy Duke running around in her short shorts.

Then again, Ben Jones is probably right that the movie isn't very good.

I thought was a truck that served as a traveling brothel on that show. Am I confusing it with a different show, or a movie?

Isn't it amazing how the liberal MSM can still slander some folks without any cause for concern about repercussions. Others may differ, but it sounds to me like they were trying to label this guy as out of touch, or simply a country hick.

I haven't really watched the Dukes in over twenty years at least. I kind of gave up when Coy and Vance stepped into the picture. Ruined what had been a decent if silly afternoon distraction.

No, I won't be seeing the Neo-Dukes. Somehow, I just don't think Jessica Simpson will quite be able to fill out Catherine Bach's "Daisy Dukes."

In the 3rd episode, he shot a man in the foot.

I knew he shot someone, I just couldn't remember the particulars.

It's been many years since I watched the series.
