So we can blame you for the absurd title of this thread?

the notion of 5000 sleeper cells is ridiculous.
Not so far-fetched, ask the Brits.

I wonder if he mentions that, due to the maintenance requirements, and suitcase nukes would be likely useless.

f they aren't maintained by a highly-skilled maintenance organization on a regular basis, they degrade to the point that they are nothing more than unusually heavy luggage.

Would there be enough conventional explosive to kill the bomber? (I assume it would be a suicide bomber.)

HE said 5000 sleeper cell INDIVIDUALS -- or 5000 murderous lunatics, take your pick.

If they have all this stuff and people, what are they waiting for? Why not detonate during last year's election, or on Inauguration Day, or during the Super Bowl, or on July 4th? Why allow the Great Satan to continue to focus it's resources overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan, picking off/up Al Qaeda operatives everyday? What are they waiting for?

Maybe this story, while possible, is more likely - bunk.

Those who are purveying this story are staggeringly irresponsible, and have destroyed any credibility they had as journalists.

Nukes aren't easy to handle, they don't preserve well, and the fact that we haven't been nuked (nor has Israel) is virtual proof that Islamists don't have them. There is nothing in their history to suggest that they would hold back for an instant, if they did have them.

Heh, great way to sell a book!

His book claims they have 20 suitcase nukes?

I'm going to write a book and claim they have 21 suitcase nukes.  Why would people want his book with only 20, when they can have mine, which offers an extra one free of charge?

And what makes you think they haven't already tried to set one off? People are working really hard to make sure that doesn't happen. But we'll never know about it because the Feds don't want us panicking and staying home from Wal-Mart!

..err on the side of caution, even if this individual did just drop out of a spaceship.

We just can't afford to have any mushroom clouds over our cities.

ABC News reported 1000 sleeper agents last night. Paul Williams was on Coast to Coast the previous night, which dwarfs Savage's radio audience (600,000 vs 5,000,000)

You have to ask yourself the question about why the cable news networks do not air the story, while focussing on liar Joe Wilson, Aruba, Hurricane Emily...

So. What do you think would deteriorate quickly? The explosive used for the implosion? (Nope) The electronics that sets the detonators off? (Nope) The detonators? (Nope) The battery? (Replaceable) The fissionable material. (Slowly) Seems to me that this notion of "rapid rot" is floated in an attempt to quell fear. If the fissionable material were to decay below critical levels, it would still supply a lot of radioactive contaminates.

Possibly, though if I recall correctly, the "suitcase" was metal-lined to help concentrate the blast wave of the conventional explosives further, so any non-nuclear detonation might do nothing more than turn the case into a metal beachball.

Suitcase nukes, while they did/do exist, are extremely advanced forms of nuclear explosive

Nukes are not that high-maintenence. A suitcase nuke would have to be VERY low-maintenence in order to not be useless under any conditions. What? Are you going to wait for a declaration of war to smuggle these in behind enemy lines? Hoping these are past their "best if used by" date is no protection.
