Just blowing up a suitcase nuke with conventional explosives would yield a dirty bomb however, 5000 jihadist turned snipers among our cities would cause more terror and mayham than anyone could imagine. Just look at what two did to the east coast not long ago. There is a storm brewing IMHO among the swarthy type but they are like independent truckers, you can't get two of them to agree on anything.

BTW, there aren't 20 suitcase nukes in the entire world. Yet somehow Al Qaeda has them.

"Don't confuse the maintenance and lifetime issues of "hydrogen bombs" with those of "atomic bombs". These are worlds apart."

Early atomic bombs have ENORMOUS maintenance requirements.

Beryllium trigger isotopes can have as little as a 53 day half-life, for instance. Polonium 210, a Man-made isotope that can *only* be created in nuclear reactors or cyclotrons, has a 140 day half-life.

Don't fission bombs also use explosives to help initiate the reaction? I know fusion bombs do, and the explosives have to be arranged very carefully to ensure that the reaction can begin, but I thought fission bombs used them as well, if not in exactly the same manner.

And the notion of 5000 sleeper cells is ridiculous.

I concur, that would mean each cell had 1000-1600 members. One or two million cells is more likly.

"Incorrect. The Russians had to steal British RDX to get their nukes to work, as RDX is one of the few conventional explosives that can survive radiation long enough to take a bomb from the lab into the field. Electronics are fried by radiation, too...as are electric wires"

I saw a so called expert on these suitcase nukes a year or so back and he said about the same thing. No way if these bombs still exist has the necessary preventive maintenance been done to make them operative

If I'm Al Qaeda, I take one of these suitcase nukes and perform a very public test explosion in, say, Kurdistan. That way, the message gets out that they've got 'em and know how to use 'em, they scare the bejeezers out of the world, and now they know the things actually work. Somehow I don't see them setting out with a bunch of suitcases that turn out to be duds.

Is it a theoretical possibility? Everything is. All I know is, it hasn't happened. And if it does, it will probably happen a nanosecond before I'm vaporized (given where I work), so what's a guy to do?

they might get help from foreign intelligence services

Too risky.  If you could figure that out, they know that the U.S. could figure it out too and realize that OBL & friends couldn't possibly have done it alone.

I think he was referring to my reference to explosives.

He claims there are at least 5,000 sleeper cell individuals, gearing up to unleash multiple nuclear attacks on primary cities, very, very soon.

I might tend to worry a bit about it of someone could answer this question for me: What are they waiting for?

So many huge symbolic deadlines have come and gone with nary a whimper from the wild-eyed moon worshipers. There is no doubt to me that if they had that capability they would have already used it.

10,000 people cross into this country from Mexico each day; and, only 12 so far have been hostile?

Al Qaeda doesn't have 5000 operatives in Iraq and Afghanistan, combined. And yet you think it does in Nuevo Laredo? I love you armchair paranoids.

"There is nothing in their history to suggest that they would hold back for an instant, if they did have them." Oh please, it is common knowledge that AQ often take years to plan and are not carried out until the dates and the moon align. Hopefully they don't have nukes, but no doubt they want them and would like to use them to kill millions of non believing infidels.

Makes sense, unless they only have 1, 2, or 3 weapons (which is much more likely than 40). Why waste them?

That's what my wife found underneath the bed the other night. Didn't recognize it as luggage I've used.

Because if it didn't happen "now" he'd look like the fool he is. "Soon" gives you wiggle room and stuff to talk about on the talk show circuit.

I'll buy that. Don't think I'll buy the book, but that sounds reasonable.

What are they waiting for?

I really want to believe that they don't have any because they would use them right away if they did. Can't answer your question except to say that they planned 911 patiently and methodically before execution.
