MIRANSHAH, Pakistan (Reuters) - U.S. forces based in Afghanistan killed 24 suspected Islamist militants inside Pakistan after coming under rocket fire from across the border that killed an Afghan soldier, officials said on Friday.

Militants hit back elsewhere on the border on Friday, killing at least seven Afghan policemen and wounding five in an attack in the Afghan province of Kandahar in which four guerrillas died, Afghan government officials said.

The militants killed by U.S. fire died late on Thursday near Lowara Mandi, a Pakistani border village in the North Waziristan tribal region, said Pakistan's military spokesman Major-General Shaukat Sultan.

He said they were thought to have included al Qaeda fighters. ``They are foreigners and suspected Taliban. They could be Afghans and people of Central Asian origin,'' he said.

A Pakistani paramilitary officer said the militants had fired missiles at a base for U.S. and Afghan forces across the border. ``The coalition forces returned fire using rockets and heavy weapons,'' he said.

A witness said he saw U.S. helicopters engaged in the attack, while Pakistan's private Geo Television said the fighters were killed by a missile.

A Pakistani intelligence official said Pakistani forces had arrested seven suspects after the clash.

Taliban spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi said seven Taliban guerrillas were killed, but his claim that three U.S. troops were killed was denied by a U.S. military spokesman in Afghanistan.

Lieutenant-Colonel Jerry O'Hara said U.S. artillery and aircraft responded to a rocket attack by militants on a border control point, in which one Afghan soldier was killed.

He said the militants fired 25 rockets, while U.S. forces replied with eight artillery shells and fire from aircraft.

``WE HIT THE TARGET''

``I can confirm we hit the target we aimed at,'' he said.

Despite its status as a key U.S. ally, Pakistan has bridled in the past at U.S. sorties across the border.
TFB - get over it.

The idiots wouldn't have been firing from Pakistan if they didn't think they had a safe haven.

We didn't invade. They just fired into where they were taking rocket fire from, after we notified Pakistan.
