Federal prosecutors investigating the leak of former CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity have asked several witnesses in the case whether they read a State Department memorandum mentioning her that circulated inside the Bush administration in the days before she was publicly named, according to people familiar with the testimony. (snip) The memo "identifies her as having selected or recommended her husband" for the Niger assignment, according to a person who has seen it. Administration officials circulated this information as a way of discrediting the reliability of Wilson's charges.
Lawyers involved in the probe said prosecutors are interested in whether anyone called back to Washington to talk about information in the memo. (snip)
Rove said of the memo that he "had never seen it, had never heard about it and had never heard anybody else talk about it," according to a lawyer familiar with his testimony. Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin, said he can say "categorically" that Rove did not obtain any information about Plame from any confidential source, such as a classified document.

This article expands beyond the NYT article last night which focused on this memo but the NYT conveniently left out the part where Rove denied ever seeing it or hearing about it and his lawyer denying the Plame info came from any classified source.

It's amazing that the NYT seems to think there's something ominous about a memo in the first place. If there hadn't been a memo to cue some of the Administration in, it would have been a sign of sheer incompetence and/or apathy. The ominous part is that someone was out there trying to hurt the country in order to hurt the President.
This is no different from what the Beeb tried to do to Tony Blair. Attempted coup d'etat by media.
Anyone standing outside the gate at CIA headquarters on any work day could have seen that she worked at the CIA. The only thing she could have been "outed" for was the fact she is a liberal Democrat operative (as is her husband).

the memo does NOT say she is a covert agent ...because she wasn't. The whole premise of Wilson's argument and outrage is that Bush outed her to get revenge...BUT the memo simply says that she recommended her husband (the truth.) It does not even discuss her status.
Remember the Newsweek article about Gitmo? They blamed the fact that the Pentagon did not CORRECT them as the reason they went with a poorly sourced story. But when Rove and others were trying to correct Wilson's falsehoods and lies, they start a federal investigation.
Fitzgerald needs a culprit... MSM needs a Republican coverup... and the Dem's need something to hide their treason. This is it.
