Police Keep Close Eye On Border Vigilantes

Vigilantes Spark Protests From Civil Rights Groups

POSTED: 3:48 pm PDT July 15, 2005 UPDATED: 5:28 pm PDT July 15, 2005

SAN DIEGO -- A group of volunteers that plan to start monitoring the San Diego County-Mexico border this weekend -- and their foes -- will not be allowed to commit vigilante or racial violence, authorities said Friday.

Participants in the grassroots project "Operation Border Watch" must limit their involvement to "eyes and ears and talking," San Diego County Sheriff Bill Kolender warned.

"If there's any violation of the law ... on either side of this issue, law enforcement will, in fact, take action," Kolender said during a news conference.

Also attending the midmorning briefing at the sheriff's Kearny Mesa headquarters were officials with the U.S. Border Patrol and the Chula Vista and National City police departments.

In recent weeks, preparations for the civilian immigration-control effort have sparked protests from civil rights groups, as did similar endeavors conducted in Arizona this year by a group called the Minutemen.

Opponents called the self-appointed border enforcers -- most of whom carry guns -- dangerous vigilantes and bigots.

The monitors say their goal is to help enforce immigration laws and that they carry firearms strictly for self-defense.

Along with law enforcement agencies, immigrant-advocacy groups have promised to send observers to the county's arid southern reaches to keep an eye on the volunteer border watchers.

Well if it takes "vigilantes" being watched to get the police to watch the borders, then so be it!

"Border vigilantes"

No press bias there.

Wow, that TV 10 is really biased.

Vigilantes Spark Protests From Civil Rights Groups

That line makes it sound like "Operation Border Watch" is responsible for the protests from the "Civil Rights Groups."

Also, it calls the people involved with "Operation Border Watch" vigilantes, while the next sentence says that they "will not be allowed to commit vigilante or racial violence." This in effect proclaims that they are breaking the law right from the beginning.

Yes, we must make sure the U.S. citizens respect the law, even if our elected officials and the Mexican citizens don't. Kinda makes you want to puke.

While they are keeping a "close eye" on the "vigilantes," maybe they could do their job and arrest some of the illegals entering the country.

LAPD has their rule#40. San Diego Sheriff's policy states that UNLESS THEIR IS A CRIME, CITIZENSHIP STATUS IS NOT TO BE QUESTIONED

Just my sentiments.

If the sheriffs would do their jobs when they stop an illegal immigrant there wouldn't be any use for civilian border patrols.

Somehow the thinking of current leadership in police departments is that they can selectivity enforce laws.

I bet you a silver dollar that they would go bonkers if the illegal was not wearing their seat belt.

No, makes me want to take up arms against those who would be our Rulers.

When there is not Law, there can be no lawlessness.

The Friggin Pols in Washington have sewn the wind with this bullshit, now they can reap the whirlwind.

Exactly my thoughts too. If the police have to be at the border to watch the vigilantes, why can't they watch the border without them? Either way the cost to Calif. would be the same, right?

If there's any violation of the law ... on either side of this issue, law enforcement will, in fact, take action

Does that mean that illegal aliens will be arrested?

But if it's regarding the issue itself, ILLEGAL immigration, then the aliens go free as always.

This is what happens today in the United States when the citizenry try to uphold the laws of the country: Law enforcement agencies turn against the US citizenry, and leave the criminals alone. Anyone see anything wrong with this picture? When your county sheriff is up for reelection make sure he is on the side of the people who elected him, not the local, state, federal government who seem to loath enforcing immigration laws.

wtf...

wouldn't it be great if the border patrol and the police were doing their job stopping the illegals in the first place?

Resources to track watchers but none to look for criminal aliens. That's your position Sheriff?

to keep an eye on the volunteer border watchers

This isn't America anymore. Ignore the invaders, but make sure to keep an eye on those who are trying to discourage the invasion...sickening.

That's what the "news" source employee said, most of 'dem dangerous people carry guns.

Yes, dangerous vigilantes and bigots, of course. Disagreeing with the pro-ILLEGAL immigrant crowd, left and right, you are those things and many more.

But what I wonder about is carrying guns. In California? It's illegal here to say the word g-n. Unless you're a criminal and then of course it's what they do. California law makers understand that and are sensitive to it but it's the law abiding citizens that cannot carry g-ns.

But it does make those critters sound more dangerous, don't it?
