AT 140kg, Australia's biggest dog really is a big softie.
Diesel, the english mastiff, might be hostile to people other than his owners, but his hulking frame conceals a big soft spot for the most unlikely of companions – Maggie the cat.
Armed with a 90cm neck and bread plate-sized paws, Diesel serves as the trustiest guard for his feline friend and their Melbourne owner, Janine Morffew.
The six-year-old's bark booms across his neighbourhood whenever a stranger comes too close.
"He is very protective . . . very protective," Ms Morffew said. "He once chased my stepson out of the house when he arrived unannounced. I feel very safe walking with him at night."
Diesel's aunt was once recognised by the Guinness Book of Records before its "biggest dog" category was stopped after owners overfed their pets.
The dimensions of the colossus startled RSPCA national president Hugh Wirth.
"This is definitely the biggest dog I've ever come across," he said.
Diesel's daily diet consists of just 500g of meat and two cups of dried biscuits. He is much less active than grandson Dozer, a 60kg, six-month-old puppy who also shares Ms Morffew's house.
