Hugh is OK but he's not the brightest bulb in the lamp.

And he can be an obnoxious blowhard much too often.

And he made little sense given that his recommendation was to nuke Damascus or some such.

Sorry, but Islam is the problem.
All believeing Muslims believe that they have a religious duty to conquer the world.

It was a politically foolish but correct statement.

I want to be very clear on this. No responsible American can endorse the idea that the U.S. is in a war with Islam.

Is Hugh living in fantasyland?

Time for Hugh Hewitt to do some Koran and Hadith/Sunnah study:

http://etext.virginia.edu/koran.html
http://www.hti.umich.edu/k/koran/browse.html
http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/fundamentals/hadithsunnah/
http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/fundamentals/hadithsunnah/bukhari/

I am just starting to study the above to determine if the "War on Terror" is a war with some Wahhabi "extremists" or whether we are at war with Islam. If we are at war with a proven minority (<1%?) of Islam then our tactics would be radically different than if we are at war with the religion as a whole. If the religion as a whole is hostile to all "infidels" then targeting concentrations of the enemy would be justified, as in any war. I don't think Hugh knows if Muslims who aren't advocating violence against infidels are just "lukewarm" Muslims, or if a minority of Muslims are wrong about their religion, and advocate violence.

Tancredo was an idiot for what he said about nuking mecca and doesn't help with the WOT .. it will only incite the terrorists to come after us even more

Though I wouldn't put Tancredo's comments in the same category as Durbin's ... but it's up there with what Newsweek and Isikoff did

There is no strategic value to bombing Mecca even after a devastating attack on the U.S. In fact, such an action would be a strategic blunder without historical parallel...

He speaks of a devastating attack on the U.S. If the attack is truly "devastating," what kind of response would you expect? Furthermore, if you wanted to prevent a "devastating" attack by suggesting an equally "devastating" attack of no strategic value to us, then the coupling of "devastating" attacks becomes strategic, unless cooler heads prevail.

Islam is a perverted "religion." It worships the black rock of Mecca. It worships the ancient temple of Baal. It worships the fallen meteriorite of eons past.
Islam is the root of the first Crusade. Islam is the bastard of Abraham.
Islam is the Johnny come lately to the table of the reverent. In short, it is the late and feble answer to Christ from the impotent groin of Baal. Not only does it fall short, it shames the God of Abraham.
Islam is the infidel. Islam is the shameful. Islam is the godforsaken. Islam is the cause of the misery of today's faithful.
If you think I'm telling the truth, you have the answer in your heart.
Protect your family from these miserable criminals. They deserve the bottom of our feet.

Hewitt is ignorant.

Nuclear response for certain attacks is a NATO doctrine, even the winie Germans and French, understand the principals.

A massive attack deserves a massive response, to the dearest targets of the enemy.

And the other thing is make certain, our exact response is understood by the enemy ahead of their actions.

Terribly ignorant article. Islam cannot exist without Mecca. Should Mecca be destroyed Islam would need to be reinvented and its religious rites and pilgrimage transferred to Medina. Then if Medina were likewise destroyed, that new version of Islam would cease to exist, and Islam would be reinvented and its religious rites like Hejira would be directed to Jerusalem.

Islam is a "holy place" religion. It is not at all like global Christianity or post-Second Temple Judaism which can function well with only a symbolic or metaphorical reference to the Holy Land and Jerusalem.

Every good Muslim who can MUST go to Mecca. So the precepts of the religion are fundamentally different from contemporary Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, etc, and the bombing, nuclear or otherwise, would be a devastating blow to Islam's core identity.

As I outlined, there would be leaders and scholars who would transfer devotions to Medina, but this would not be universal and Islam would fracture into a wide variety of smaller sects some more spiritualised, some built on exacting blood revenge by eliminating all Americans.

But of course, once Muslim terrorists have nuked Atlanta, for example, most every American will want Mecca AND Medina nuked... including many who profess otherwise now. It is the way of things.

We are not in a war with devout Muslims.
That's a true statement.
We are in a war with Muslims who think that their faith compels them to kill non-believers and the nations that support those extremists.

Hey Hugh, you do understand the difference between a Muslim and an Islamist, don't you? All Muslims aren't Islamists. There are even Christian Muslims and athiest Muslims.
You, and some others, might be taken more seriously when ya'll make and understand the distinction and the difference.

he visited Beslan. He knows the cost of encouraging such violence. I believe he will want to make clear that the vast majority of Muslims do not support that kind of butchery.

Really?

So if 55, 65 or even 75 percent of Muslims don't support the repeated and ongoing butcheries of Beslan, Baghdad, London, and Bali, are we supposed to take comfort that 25, 35, or 45 percent of Muslims do support the butchery of "infidels"?

Sorry, Hugh. The recent Pew opinion study - though couched in the brightest of Pollyanna optimism - tells me everything I need to know about the "vast majority of Muslims". And it doesn't even include Saudi Arabia, Syria, "Palestine", Libya, or Yemen.

Glad to see the low numbers for Indonesia and Turkey, which have cultural underpinnings much stronger than the insane and murderous Sunni-Wahabbi pathology.
