Hoover's Institution [and Bill Moyers revelation]
Wall Street Journal ^ | 20 Jul 2005 | Lawrence H. Silberman

Only a few weeks before the 1964 election, a powerful presidential assistant, Walter Jenkins, was arrested in a men's room in Washington. Evidently, the president was concerned that Barry Goldwater would use that against him in the election. Another assistant, Bill Moyers, was tasked to direct Hoover to do an investigation of Goldwater's staff to find similar evidence of homosexual activity. Mr. Moyers' memo to the FBI was in one of the files.

When the press reported this, I received a call in my office from Mr. Moyers. Several of my assistants were with me. He was outraged; he claimed that this was another example of the Bureau salting its files with phony CIA memos. I was taken aback. I offered to conduct an investigation, which if his contention was correct, would lead me to publicly exonerate him. There was a pause on the line and then he said, "I was very young. How will I explain this to my children?" And then he rang off. I thought to myself that a number of the Watergate figures, some of whom the department was prosecuting, were very young, too.

With WSJ and Brit Hume reporting everybody important to Moyers will know. It has to sting.

I was very involved in the Houston, Texas, Goldwater Campaign in 1964 and believe me, there was not any chance of any gays being involved back then.

Were there any lezboos then?

No, Bender. They weren't around until the Ted Kennedy Presidential Campaign in 1976.

It's a confusing sentence. I guess Moyers didn't want his children to know that he'd once gone after homosexuals for political purposes. Either that or he was in the restroom with Jenkins.

If we go through a 8-year run...starting in 1964...with Goldwater running America...it is a vastly different place than today. Kissenger would never have been allowed to draw out the negoations and lengthen the war. By the end of 1965...B-52's would have gotten everyone to the table and wrapped up the mess before it started. The anti-war effort would never have occurred and Woodstock would have been just a simple meeting of a dozen bands...without significance. Joan Baez would never have been heard of...and the Smothers Brothers would have been held down to what they really were. The national park service would have found a very friendly Goldwater ready to enlarge the national parks and forrests. The Kremlin would have found a man very willing to go the distance and counter-balance whatever they were doing. Cuba likely would have fallen because an eventual 2nd Bay of Pigs would have been accomplished and been successful. Nixon would have found himself a newspaper editor job and never done anything else. By 1972, the economy would have been booming and a stronger America intact.
