PA Senate 2006: Casey 52% Santorum 41%
Rasmussen Reports ^ | 7/22/05 | Rasmussen

Posted on 07/22/2005 7:50:48 AM PDT by nj26

The latest Rasmussen Reports survey shows that Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum is living up to his reputation as the most vulnerable incumbent at this point in the 2006 election cycle. Santorum trails Democrat Bob Casey, Jr by eleven percentage points, 52% to 41%.

Casey is viewed favorably by 49% of the state’s likely voters while 27% have an unfavorable opinion. For Santorum, 44% say favorable and 43% unfavorable.

Casey earns 85% of the vote from self-identified liberal voters and 62% from moderates. Santorum currently attracts 66% of the conservative vote.

Typically, Republicans do better among married voters. However, at the moment, Santorum attracts 41% of married voters and 40% from those who are not married.

Among voters who Approve of the job President Bush is doing, just 70% say they will vote for Santorum. Early in Election 2004, several Republican candidates had relatively low levels of support from Bush voters. However, as Election Day approached, their support from Bush voters increased dramatically. This phenomenon helped elect Republicans in Oklahoma and Alaska. The President is significantly more popular in those states than he is in Pennsylvania.

In the Keystone State, the President’s Job Approval is at 46%, slightly below his national average. Fifty-three percent (53%) disapprove.

Seventy-eight percent (78%) of those who disapprove of Bush will vote for Casey.

Looking ahead to Election 2008, 46% of Pennsylvania voters say they will vote for the Democrat’s nominee while 40% plan on voting for the GOP candidate.

So how can Santorum turn this around? Spend more time in the Pittsburgh area or what? People in Pittsburgh believe in government, and he may be hard-pressed to hold his home area.

Raz is showing much higher nagatives for Santorum and Casey than other polls. Maybe a different wording? Don't remember off top/head.

As far as I can tell, Casey's main asset is his last name. I'll be very interested to hear Casey in a debate.

So Santorum goes and Specter stays. Good job, Mr. President. And Rick, you brought this on yourself.

Oh well. The polls have spoken. I guess there's no point in having an election. In fact, Rick should resign now and just let Casey have his seat. It would save a lot of money that way.

My prediction: Defeatism sucks. Santorum will win.

Unfortunately, it looks like Pennsylvania is NJ of 20 years ago...a typically Republican state that became a swing state that will become a solidly Democrat state

Maybe Santorum should have thought more about the effect of backing Specter over Twoomy in the Republican primary.

I'm not sure. But the Dems are lining up a very competitive slate in Pennsylvania, for the Senate and also in several House districts. And Pennsylvania has several competitive House districts currently held by Republicans. The Dems are fielding their best candidates for races across the state. That doesn't necessarily mean that they'll win. But watch the 6th district (suburban Philly, carried by the GOP incumbent 51/49% in 2004), where his former Democratic opponent is seeking a rematch, and the 18th district (suburban Pittsburgh), where Barbara Hafer (former Dem State Treasurer) is running.

The PA GOP needs to pull its act together, or there may be several unpleasant surprises next year.

Actually, not living in the Pittsburgh area has been part of his problem -- the flap over his children's cyberschool education being paid for by one of the local school districts, even though Santorum and his family have not actually lived in the area for some time -- this has caused him considerable damage.

On the other hand, Casey, despite his alleged anti-abortion stance, is no prize either. He is yet another tax and spend Democrat. But I think you're right...his ancestor was well liked by a number of people here (not by me), so he has the name recognition goign for him.

I don't like Santorum. He is a condescending, self-righteous, piece of carp. I'll vote for my cat before I vote for him.

"C'mon PA don't let those scummy slimy RATS win!!!"

We also need to remember that any accurate opinion poll in PA won't necessarily match the election results, given the rampant election fraud that the city of Philadelphia has perfected. If Santorum doesn't go into the election with a substantial lead in the polls, he is in bad shape after Philly is done playing with the numbers.

Wrong question: How can WE turn this around, saving a good Conservative Senator from being run off the road by the Democrats?

Whether Santorum wins or loses will depend on us.

This is one conservative vote Santorum will not get. He loves Specter, he can deal with it now.

And how did backing Specter hurt Santorum? The folks on the right are still supportive of Santorum. It's the moderates he has to worry about. How do you think they would have reacted if Santorum had supported Toomey?

I would rather have a good man stand up, speak truth and stay steadfast in his conviction. How do you think the Prez and Santorum brought this on him?
