Getting Toomey's support is hopefully an important goal for Rick.

It is amazing that PA is so divided that the black vote of liberal Philadelphia could tip the balance to elect most Democrats statewide now.

So how can Santorum turn this around?

He can't.

Instead of worrying about holding seats in increasingly blue Pennsylvania, how about getting the four seats in deep red ND, SD, and Montana now held by RATs, and defending MT next year?

Well, those two ND Democrats are as secure as Robert Carlyle Byrd, for one thing. It is a shame to forfeit PA, but the middle section of the state cannot match the Democrat majorities of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Unfortunately PA is now a lib state PERIOD

Consider PA-8 (Bucks county and part of NE Philly). Kerry carried this district by 2%, but Mike Fitzpatrick carried the same district by 12%. Admittedly, Casey isn't the far-left moonbat that ran against Fitzpatrick (and used the Moore propaganda film as part of her campaign), but it shows what can be done.

As I posted it depends on the balck vote turnout

The Dems have to motivate them in a non presidential year so watch for some dirty tactics

"So Santorum goes and Specter stays. Good job, Mr. President. And Rick, you brought this on yourself." Well said....Santorum sided with Specter...against an honorable man.....played the "cant we all just get along" tune with the RATS....good bye Santorum and other Rs that havent got the message.

the 18th district (suburban Pittsburgh), where Barbara Hafer (former Dem State Treasurer) is running.

This is the first I've seen of that news, but I checked google news and you're right, she's talking about it. That seems like a strange choice. How likely is she to beat Murphy? I thought that was a strongly Republican district and she's not the kind of "Democrat" who can win.

It's not the black vote in Philadelphia that does it, it's the huge liberal soccer Mom vote in the Philly suburbs that swings races. The black vote in Philadelphia = rural conservative vote in the T. Party base vs. party base. Everything else is where the action is.

Judging by the comments on FR about Santorum, I think everyone will gain from a Santorum defeat. The Dems gain a Senate seat. RINOs will argue that Santorum's loss proves the GOP can't pander exculsively to White Christians. And hard line right wingers will attempt to rationalize that Santorum's defeat is a message to Northeastern RINOs like Rudy G. or Mitt R. not to run for President.

Looks like some "Freepers" need to start their "Freepers for Casey" club (Like the Freepers for Obama club).

Santorum's problems are his own and not reflective of any broader changes in Pennsylvania since 1994 and 2000. Changes may be taking place, I don't know, but it's a long way to New Jerseyhood and Santorum losing wouldn't prove that they're there.

That would be a real shame.

Heard him interviewed on Rush last week - very bright, a lot of insight. Got the impression he was way ahead of Rush - that doesn't happen often - and was trying to slow down.

Only impression of him before had been as a spear carrier standing behind Frist or some other Republican senate spokesman.

Hope this can be turned around.

--Exactly. It seems to me that the best course of action is to support Santorum and pull out a win against Casey, but make it clear to the GOP and Santorum himself via letters, RNC donation refusals, and public speech that we are highly dissatisfied with his decision to back Specter over Toomey last year. The GOP has a *big* "politics over principles" problem, and electing Bob Casey is not going to fix it. The GOP assumption following Santorum's defeat would be that he was too conservative, too outspoken against gay marriage, too pro-life, had too many kids, etc, and his loss would be interpreted as a statement in support of McCainiacs and Lincoln Chafee types. Hassle the RINOs, but don't do it by supporting candidates who are more liberal. When the Dem candidate is more conservative than the RINO s/he is running against, go for it, but that's not the case with Santorum v. Casey.

Guess that visit by Howard Dean in support of Casey is helping his poll numbers.

"Elections aren't about putting a perfect candidate in the office. They are about choosing which of the candidates will BEST represent your views and values. "

I am for any candidate who will throw illegals out, close the border, tell Mexico to go jump in the ocean. A candidate who wants jobs to stay in America and get rid of the H-1b and H-2b programs. And Santorum is the complete opposite.

How can he be "pro-family" when gives away every job to foriegn slime and help wages be eroded with 5 cents/hour illegals?

That first quote wasn't mine...I was responding to another Freeper who said it. I just don't have a whole lot of enthusiasm for most of the current crop of politicians.

I don't like Santorum...never have and never will. He is just too smug, too arrogant and too condescending for my tastes. Most politicians at least make a pretense of being concerned for their average working class constituents. This one doesn't even try. His latest b-s (well, actually, he's been saying it all along, but now he's put it in print) denouncing working parents who hold sometimes two or more jobs apiece for not staying at home with their children was kind of the last straw for me. Easy for him to have a whole gaggle of children and have his wife stay home with his six or seven figure income. Not so easy for most working stiffs out there.

Would Casey be better? Well, he does have some conservative tendencies, but I think he would still be a tax and spend Democrat. Democrats never met a tax they didn't like.

Who am I going to vote for in this election? I honestly don't know.
