Study shows circumcision may reduce AIDS risk

Circumcising men can help protect them from the AIDS virus, researchers said on Tuesday after finishing the first study that tried using the procedure specifically to prevent infection.

But United Nations health officials cautioned that more trials were necessary before they would recommend this as a method to protect against AIDS.

The circumcised men were 65 percent less likely to become infected with the deadly and incurable virus, the researchers told the International AIDS Society Conference in Rio de Janeiro.

Several studies have suggested that men who are circumcised have a lower rate of HIV infection. This has been especially noticeable in some parts of Africa, where some groups are routinely circumcised while neighboring groups are not.

Researchers believe circumcision helps to cut infection risk because the foreskin is covered in cells that the virus seems able to easily infect. The virus may also survive better in a warm, wet environment like that found beneath a foreskin.

Bertran Auvert of the French National Research Agency INSERM and colleagues tested more than 3,000 uninfected men aged 18-24 South Africa's Guateng province, where 32 percent of adults are infected.

Some of the men were circumcised at the start of the trial while others had the procedure after 21 months. At the end of the trial, researchers registered 69 HIV cases, and only 18 of them were in the men who were circumcised at the start.

"It shows that the intervention (circumcision) prevented between six and seven out of 10 possible infections," said Auvert, noting that although the protection rate was high it was only partial.

Wow, don't make vulgar personal suggestions about me.

Reread your words, you sound very angry towards women.

I posted an article on posisbly helping reduce the risk of HIVand you retort by personal insults and creepy suggestions

you are all way off base here. Circumcision doesn't reduce AIDS risk. People who have their kids circumcized are more relgious than people who don't. In this case, they tend to be more conservative muslims.

Study shoud read: People with basic concept of morality less likely to contract AIDS.

The story with copious amount of reasearch says otherwise.

I know of many wild people who have been circumsized and are not at all religious. (NYC)

Such as Jewish friends who are atheist/ nonreligious but raised with Jewish traditions (hence they were circumsized)

Right, but this is about Africa, where it is different.

For me this just proves my attitude that uncut men are turn off due to their "holding area" as you put it. ROFL

If a foreskin is a holding area for germs, what does that make a vagina?

(Mabye we should cut off our ears, too--it's easier than washing them.)

Yes......

In countries where male circumcision is uncommon and heterosexual HIV rates are high or rising rapidly, the procedure could be a powerful way of reducing the spread of the disease, the new study shows.

It also said that circumsion benefits straight men, but gay men would still have higer risk of spreading aids (Any direct benefit to gay men would almost certainly be restricted to the insertive partner in @nal intercourse, not the receptive partner)

Guess unshielded finger tips must lose their ability to feel too.

Fingertips--unlike the glans of the penis--were designed by nature to be always exposed.

I wonder how your eyes would get along without eyelids.

You already used that line about cutting off one's ears before.

And you also used the line about vaginas being full of germs before too.

Isn't more fashionable to leave your son uncircumcised these days?
I hear the rich and famous aren't circumcising their boys.
These rumors are widely spread by a small but very vocal and well organized anti-circumcision group, predominantly comprised of childless men. In fact, most of the "rich and famous" continue to request circumcision for their sons, even in California where fashion is often put ahead of practicality and health benefits. Infant circumcision rates may have declined in some hospitals, but physician office and post-infancy circumcision rates have increased.

(Below you will find a few examples of recent postings to CIRCLIST with regard to celebrity circumcision. Please note that we have not sought to substantiate these postings.)

John Travolta left the set during a recent filming to be at son Jett's bedside as the 4-year-old boy undergoes a "minor operation". His publicist indicated "John wanted very much to be by his son's side." She described the operation as "a normal pediatric procedure". The boy had to be circumcised because of ongoing problems caused by his foreskin (recurring urethritis). Unlike John, who himself is circumcised, the boy was not circumcised at birth.

Cindy Crawford had her new son routinely circumcised on request by her husband, who is Jewish in origin. Like father, like son!

In the biography of Arnold Schwarzeneger it reports that, after coming to the US, his coach also encouraged him to be circumcised, which he did eventually have performed. He has subsequently stated that he is very pleased with the results and would have his sons circumcised.

The tabloid press recently reported that Prince William was circumcised at his request (at age 15) at a private surgical clinic in London. No doubt he felt different than his peers and wanted to be circumcised like them and the other men in his family. Unlike all of the other Royals, neither William or his younger brother Harry were circumcised at birth. (more info)

Rosie O'Donnell's recently adopted son was circumcised by a Jewish physician recommended by the Spielberg's several months after Rosie adopted the boy. Rosie had reportedly requested it be performed at the hospital prior to the adoption, but for some reason the procedure was not performed.

Film actress and model, Natastia Kinski recently reported that her ex-husband wanted to circumcise their 14 year old son, Aljosha.(Click photo at right, Aljosha is on the right side of the photo, and his teen sister is on the left) Since the boy was staying with his father for visitation and notified his mother what was about to transpire, one could surmise he wasn’t keen on the idea. The interesting thing is that Nastassja«s ex-husband, Ibrahim Moussa, isn«t the real father of Aljosha. The two met when Nasti was already pregnant in the 2nd month. The real father is unknown, so is his circ status. I wonder what his teen sister thought of him being circumcised???

River Phoenix, born to parents with strong beliefs in leading an alternative lifestyle, brought River into this world on August 23, 1970 in a log cabin. The event was totally natural and River was reportedly not circumcised because of his parents beliefs. Nude photos of River taken during shooting of the Mosquito Coast verifyy this (age 15). At some later time, River chose to be circumcised as is confirmed by his autopsy report. Rumor has it that this occurred shortly after his film with Keanu Reeves, who also chose to be circumcised during his latter teen years.

Recently Damon Wayans appeared on the David Letterman show and said he has just had his 11 year old son circumcised. He did not have him done at birth because of all of the recent information against circumcision. However he indicated his son requested to be circumcised because all of his friends at school were circumcised and he felt the odd one out! Shortly thereafter his 9 year old son was also circumcised.

One of the most watched morning talk-shows on North American TV is the live show of Regis and Kathie Lee. At the beginning of the March 11 broadcast Kathie Lee Giffford told how she had had slipped a note into her son Cody's diaper when she had taken him to have his circumcision done. The note said matter-of-factly that the doctor shouldn't trim too much (it was couched as a little verse) and she then commented how the doctor did a perfect job on Cody's penis. It's pleasant to see such a naturally sensuous female indicate without any kind of shame how she considers circumcision to be the perfectly normal way to treat a foreskin.

Catherina Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas recently had a son, Dylan. I read that she is fascinated by the Jewish religion and that her son should be raised according to the Jewish faith, particularly in that her husband, Michael, is Jewish.

With the first anniversary of the birth of the McCaughey septuplets (Iowa, USA), many of the nightly news magazines have been running specials. This week we had the opportunity to observe the babies during diaper changing and it was evident that the boys had been routinely circumcised. It obviously wasn't done the week they were born, but I suspect it was performed just before they left the hospital. All seemed happy and in good health. No doubt their routine infant circumcisions will do well for them physically and emotionally during their entire lives.

Not putting your winky into a man's rectum reduces the AIDS risk

Not sharing needles reduces the AIDS risk

Abstaining from sex until marriage reduces the AIDS risk

Thats kinda like saying that since you are going to drive your car into a bridge abuttment at 80mph anyway grow your hair longer and you'll have a better chance of surviving a serious head injury thanks to the extra padding.

If longer hair could give me anywhere close to a 65% chance of walking away from an otherwise fatal accident, I'd grow a fro' and beard like Jerry Garcia!!! I'm not saying that the behavior that transmits HIV is anything other than destructive of self and society, but it sounds like circumcision might be a meaningful advantage to give a child just in case of what they might grow up into.

For many African men uncut women are a turn off due to their "holding area".

But I'm not ROFL. I think cutting the genitals of children whether it is boys in American or girls in Africa is a harmful cultural practice that should end.

The girls' ENTIRE source of any orgasms is gone forever.

Some forms of female genital cutting (FGC) are less damaging than male circumcision. The least damaging form of FGC is genital scarification.

The form of FGC most similar to male circumcision is called sunna circumcision. Sunna circumcision removes the prepuce of a girl's clitoris. Male circumcision removes the prepuce of a boy's penis. Both sunna circumcision of girls and male circumcision of boys are done mainly for social or cultural reasons. Both are done by medical doctors in hospitals.

Perhaps someone can explain the ethical difference between an Egyptian doctor cutting off the prepuce of a girl's clitoris and an American doctor cutting off the prepuce of a boy's penis.
