The best part of the New Yorker's Q&A with morning show war writer Ken Auletta is at the end. Couric told you she believes it is her responsibility as a journalist to explore and talk seriously about issues 'that people need to know about to be informed citizens.'
She then persued an exclusive interview with the 'Runaway Bride' Jennifer Wilbanks and defended it as 'a terrific story.'Did you get a sense from any of the morning anchors that there was an internal conflict about what their journalistic mission was?
Most people don't get out of bed in the morning believing they are going to do something tawdry. When they do, they rationalize it. At the networks, such rationaizations are commonplace. I don't believe Couric was lying to me when she said it 'was a terrific story.'
I believe she was lying to herself. An hour long interview with the 'Runaway Bride' is not why she got into journalism.

The Runaway Bride story is the depth of Katie's journalistic ability!
Perky is as perky does, but ugly goes straight to the bone.
Whatever happened to the runaway bride story?
All the news media outlets were all over it and suddenly all abandoned it at the same time.
I wish I knew who gives them their marching orders on what story to chase! They obviously get orders from someone.
I think that story still has a funny ring to it, supposedly she was gambling at the Las Vegas Treasure Island casion telling people she was going to 'come into money'
Katie isn't in the journalism business.
She's in the selling tv ad space business.
>>>>She's in the selling tv ad space business.
That is the exact purpose of any TV content - keep people from changing channels between commecrial sets.
