DOYLESTOWN, PA (AP) A computer failure may mean that some Bucks County gun owners won’t get their renewal notices before their permits expire.

Sheriff Edward Donnelly says he thinks no more than a few dozen renewal notices have gone out late. But Andrew Barniskis, the legislative chairman for the Falls Township Rifle and Pistol Association, says he thinks the problem is more widespread.

Barniskis says he brought the problem of late renewal notices to Donnelly’s attention more than a year ago and was assured the problem would be fixed.

Gun permits must be renewed every five years, and the sheriff’s office is required by law to send gun owners renewal notices 60 days before their permits expire. Donnelly says staff have been issuing the renewal notices by hand since a computer in his office failed.

"Donnelly says staff have been issuing the renewal notices by hand since a computer in his office failed."

There are probably dozens of computer-literate people in Bucks County who would be glad to come in and put their computer right, no charge.

What type of permits are these? CCW?

Yes, PA has issued CCW permits for at least 30 yrs. You get them from your Sheriffs office in your county of residence. Issuance now is pretty much on demand if you have a clean record. It used to vary by county, with Philly in a world of it's own, refusing to honor the rest of the states counties, but PA Statutes now clearly define that a county issued permit is good in the whole Commnwealth.

When did they change the law to send out notices? In allegheny county if your permit expires it was up to you to go get the new one! I didnt get a notice when my last one expired, thats for sure! Is the notice act a county by couty thing, or is it state law?
