Documents Tell of Brutal Improvisation by GIs

Interrogated General's Sleeping-Bag Death, CIA's Use of Secret Iraqi Squad Are Among Details

By Josh White
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, August 3, 2005; Page A01

Iraqi Maj. Gen. Abed Hamed Mowhoush was being stubborn with his American captors, and a series of intense beatings and creative interrogation tactics were not enough to break his will. On the morning of Nov. 26, 2003, a U.S. Army interrogator and a military guard grabbed a green sleeping bag, stuffed Mowhoush inside, wrapped him in an electrical cord, laid him on the floor and began to go to work. Again.

It was inside the sleeping bag that the 56-year-old detainee took his last breath through broken ribs, lying on the floor beneath a U.S. soldier in Interrogation Room 6 in the western Iraqi desert. Two days before, a secret CIA-sponsored group of Iraqi paramilitaries, working with Army interrogators, had beaten Mowhoush nearly senseless, using fists, a club and a rubber hose, according to classified documents.

I see this "news" comes from the Washington Compost, that great repository of support for American military personnel. Pardon me while I hurl.

The sleeping-bag interrogation and beatings were taking place in Qaim about the same time that soldiers at Abu Ghraib, outside Baghdad, were using dogs to intimidate detainees, putting women's underwear on their heads, forcing them to strip in front of female soldiers and attaching at least one to a leash.

I swear, I put these "torture" stories up against what we read about Saddam Hussein's soldiers, Nazi guards, Cuban soldiers, and I just LAUGH OUT LOUD at what these left-wing gerbil-strokers call "torture."

WAAAAAAAA!!!!!

The guy died in a sleeping bag. He was beaten. He suffocated. Hmmmnn... sounds like he got off easy. That was a man responsible for the deaths of countless people. The torture of others. God only knows what else. Some people are sub-human and should be treated as such. Far as I am concerned, he got off easy. MSM and Lib's can just go shove that where the sun don't shine. These aren't preschool bullies we are playing with here for God's sake!!!

If only they were this interested in protecting Americans instead of accused terrorists, 9-11 might never have happened. But I guess since they know they are being protected by the very military they castigate, they have no problem dumping on our guys, as opposed to these "innocents" they kvetch over, who would lop off their heads without hesitation for making the slightest criticism.

Forget journalist ethics or whatever they hide behind--don't these people know who the REAL enemies are? Or are they convinced that if they continue to behave as sources for Al Jazeera propaganda that they will be treated with well once the eeeeevil Bush is routed and the joint Islamofascist-Democrat-Socialist government takes over?

Isn't it the goal of the terrorist to die?

Again the media trys to ratchet up the conflict! What is it with them? Are they trying to breed more terrorists? Or insurgents as they call them.

Russia did to ABC what I wish we could do to some in our own media!

If it would have saved the life of a single GI I would personally been happy to pound the lumps out of that sleeping bag.

Hmm. Ye Olde Rubber Hose interrogation tool.

US Army standard issue: 1 each - hose, rubber - interrogation type - camo style: desert.

What is it with them?

See the book by David horowitz....Unholy Alliance.

Unholy Alliance : Radical Islam and the American Left (Hardcover)

Reviewer: Kat Bakhu (Albuquerque, NM United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had long wondered why people on the Left had the propensity to speak more positively about people who would slit their throats than they do about their own country, which affords them more freedom and opportunity than anywhere else. David Horowitz has answered that question thoroughly and convincingly in his Unholy Alliance. Where I felt bewildered and confused, I now feel crystal clear. Unholy Alliance is such a great book.

It begins with the leftist movements at the beginning of the 20th Century, and works its way up to the present day, exploring the anti-American attitude of these movements in detail. Horowitz shows that the enemies of the US back then are largely the same group today, operating under the same misperceptions, making the same mistakes, and pursuing the same impossible utopia.

Individual chapters are included on the Patriot Act (I was persuaded that it is a GOOD thing); the democratic flip-flop on Iraq once G.W. Bush implemented what they agreed with Clinton needed to be done; the driving components of the current anti-war movement; as well as chapters on individual personalities who are major spokespeople of the Left. Horowitz covers a lot of ground, and he covers it concisely and clearly. Unholy Alliance is richly informative without ever being boring or plodding.

This book is so illuminating that I simply cannot do justice to it here. I love people who reason so clearly that they help me get my own reasoning clear. Horowitz is just that type of person! In the terrain of mindless clichés (no-blood-for-oil, etc.), he is a breath of real fresh air.

That is exactly what it was about, saving the lives of our soldiers.

I've not read this one, but have read three of Horowitz's books. Your right, his style is clean and concise.

As to this thread, the general should count himself lucky.

Agreed. I'm not saying abuses should be tolerated, but the key here is the word "improvisation." You have an isolated incident of abuse, and then they say this was happening at teh same time as Abu Grahib. No connection to any official policy, but they obviously are implying it was all happening as part of "something." It wasn't.

The incident they describe happened at the same time as all kinds of bad events in many different locations in Iraq, the Middle East, The World. If they are connected in any way, it is by human nature which is flawed.

To get back to your main point, the objectives of the left are mind bogglingly destructive and suicidal. Those objectives are the opposite of any concern for the mistreatment of human beings. If publicizing it is not part of the leftist agenda, they are perfectly happy with the slaughter of innocents by the millions.

Just listen to John Kerry on Dick Cavett coldly saying that after we abandon our South Vietnamese allies, the "political" murders of those who sided with us will be no big deal.

DO we know if these reports are accurate.

If they are accurate, are we really saying it is OK to beat to death a major in an opponent's army, just to try to get information?

Beating someone to death is a lot different than the stuff the dems have been hooting about which didn't really do any harm.

I don't support beating to death prisoners of war, or illegal combatants, or even terrorists who were caught with explosives.

I'm fine if they are killed while being apprehended, but once they are in our custody I don't support killing them while trying to get information. Once in our custody they should only be killed if it is at the end of a process in which they are found worthy of death (such as by a tribunal or a court).

So my question is, do we trust this story, and is this an isolated case or standard operating procedure (if it is true)?

Beating this guy to death was a mistake. It's hard to get information out of a corpse.

Given that I believe the story, I also believe the story shows this is only an aberration. I don't support this treatment.

The CIA is scary. I'm sure the democrats will rail about the CIA involvment in this, and ask for the name of the CIA operatives so they can publish them for the world.
