perhaps we better put down or better yet do away with military. Long separations there & hardships - occasionally death & often families split over these choices.

We need to be careful when we make some statements. I had a husband that was with our child every day & destroyed him emotionally. I would have done anything for a focused and caring man like Lance.

I don't want to dwell on this because everyone reading this thread has flaws - yes sins - that make them unworthy to their creator. I find it disturbing when one cannot look at the total picture but sees the half empty cup or the flaw making one less than perfect. Lance's children are young & he will be a very vital part of their life at this point & he will also positively impact in a tremendous way untold children around the world.

looks good to me billie.. and that pix for some reason looks cool! when I went up this AM to take my mom breakfast (she is an invalid) she wagged her finger at me & said "young lady I hope you don't intend to bike in this heat"..

I laughed. and said no, which is the truth. I am NOT a hot weather biker. That is why my pre sunrise rides are fun..cool & energetic.

BTW.. as I am turning over a "big time" decade this year, I also chucked about "young lady".. you are always your mom & dad's "kids" aren't you?

I think your analogy is flawed. Defense of our nation is absolutely necessary. Bicycle racing is not.

Plus, I'm not here to slander Lance; I only want to point out that I don't feel he has the character to be one of "Free Republic's Finest".

If he had put his career on hold the minute he sensed trouble within his marriage, for the sake of his children, I would have admired him for that.

He didn't though, and that's why I don't feel that he should be honored here. He will get plenty of accolades elsewhere, but I just don't feel conservatives should place him on a pedestal.

Dolly, This is a great thread and I really admire Lance Armstrong because he never gave in to cancer and didn't quit living.

I agree. I wish all those who slam some one with a killer work ethic, rags to riches, leadership in the face of (extreme) adversity, and charity had so few skeletons in their closet as does Lance. Sadly, a divorce is one of his. It happens over 50% of all marriages these days (at least the Clintons stayed together for Chelsea's sake, huh Lance critics??)

Republican or Democrat, makes no difference in some one like Lance's case.

Guess we will have to agree to disagree FReeper FRiend. I admire many people for who they are. I have found unfortunately even among conservatives there are degrees of acceptance for various people. Do you recall the trashing our dear first lady received when she made the comments in a DC speech? This is our president's wife & you would have thought she had done a strip show on national TV to hear the way some of the FR folks tore into her.

I am sometimes "burned" in life because I give people the benefit of the doubt.

Hope you will stick around with us at the Finest as you have perseverance, a good mind & the best of intentions. Most of our threads here are pretty gentle. I apologize if this was deeply offensive to you or anyone else. I wont apologize for doing it, as this is a man I admire deeply for many reasons & I think time will tell regarding his children, the "rock star" and the true impact he makes for our country/world
