TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida State University doesn't plan to change its "Seminoles" nickname.
The NCAA decided today to ban schools using Native American names and symbols from hosting championship events. But Florida State President T-K Wetherell says he'll sue the NCAA for its - quote - "outrageous and insulting" decision.
Wetherell says - quote - "This university will forever be associated with the "unconquered" spirit of the Seminole Tribe of Florida."
The NCAA decided to ban the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments. And nicknames or mascots deemed hostile or abusive won't be allowed on team uniforms at collegiate tournaments after February First.
The Seminole Tribe of Florida has issued a resolution supporting Florida State's "Seminoles" nickname.
This Gator says "Go Noles!"
NCAA = National Communist Athletic Association
Isn't the team name sanctioned by the Seminole tribe?
PC run amok.
Seems that the PC crowd is reduced to defining "victims" who don't consider themselves victims. Good for the Seminoles.
I wonder if the Native American movement would be happy if it was forbidden to ever mention them, their tribe names, or acknowledge that they ever existed, so then they could never be offended.
Maybe that is what is needed - bring any mention of an Indian tribe down to the same level as the N word, never say it.
How about the universities do to the NCAA brainstems essentially what the individual union memberships did to the AFL-CIO?
"It would be a step in the right direction."
...it certainly would.
The pc liberals have been trying this for years..looks like they finally got their wish...except we got a lot of Nole alumni who are lawyers and think we can beat this crap. This is ridiculous. We have permission from the Seminole tribe in Florida to use their name. This is bs.
> Isn't the team name sanctioned by the Seminole tribe?
Yes it is, there was an article posted here in June about it
I'm waiting for a team to change its name to the Fighting Plankton

Of course, this in no way means we like each other. LOL
PC libs will lose this one. No way the FL Seminole crowd is going to put away their Seminole-logo'd stuff.
I guess Notre Dame's Leprechaun with an attitude is sill OK.
This argument has never been about Indians being upset over team names and logos. It's been about Liberals being upset on their behalf as they desperately search for another victim class.
I am so pissed right now..unreal.
Here's the pc idiot in all her glory:
Good and this Longhorn will now go out and by a Flordia State shit to wear to support their cause. Then I will burn it if my Horns play the 'Noles someday!
Yes..they gave us permission years ago when this crap first came up. But true to liberalism, the liberals are trying to force THEIR own will for the GOOD of the unsuspecting people. Unreal. I hope this goes all the way to the Supreme court.
They should rename themselves the Florida State Condoms - I'm sure that would be OK with the NCAA.
I think it's time to disband the NCAA. They have outlived their usefulness anyway.
Personally I prefer The Fighting White Trash of Arkansas and the Aggravated WASPS of Connecticut....
Good! I pray that they are successfully in all regards!
Take a bow. That was excellent.
Make that The Aggrieved Liberal Wasps of Connecticut. Hope they get their @sses kicked by the Right Winged Red Neckers of Texas....
I think FSU should develop an honorary back up mascot just in case.
We can call him Knight.
He'll be a fat white guy in a bright red sweater.
He'll yell at a few referees.
Throw a few chairs... and at half time the pep squad can roll him out in a casket, face down of course, and tell NCAA President Miles Brand to "kiss his a**."
> How about the universities do to the NCAA brainstems essentially what the individual union memberships did to the AFL-CIO?
> *Fire* 'em.
I'd have used another f-word :)
Geez. Per here c.v. - she is active on 14 committees, all at the same time. Then again she works for the state; which allows for PC correct, non-work related efforts to fit into their 30 hour work week.
Very well said indeed.
This is now affecting me personally now...what is it with liberals and the state of Florida? They do everything in their power to screw up my state, now my university. Thank God, even the liberal alumni are furious at this. In some of the internet bulletin boards they are speaking out.
Does Iowa St get to play Florida Stae in football this year...
Yes - see the last line in this article.
OH SHOOT. What a ditz! I am so sorry. I posted President Wetherell's email wrong -- it is not FUS (hahaha)but FSU. Here's the correct contact info at Florida State:
firstname.lastname@example.org. fax is 850.644.9936. SO SORRY. (I need a Personal Assistant to get through life).
How about naming teams the Gays?
I love the mascot. Really made my day.
No, they don't play in 2005. I believe Iowa tate is waiting for the Seminoles to changes their name to the Semen Holes before adding them to their schedule....
NCAA = STUPID!
We need to look into that team name. Sounds like you are promoting the evil cattle industry that is causing heart attacks and enviromental rape of pristine areas where buffalo should be roaming...
>> "B.S. in Journalism" <<
That kind of sums it all up, doesn't it.
Yep...Eagles and Tigers are endangered in some places, so they're gonna have to protect their namesake. They will cancel all teams using endangered or near-endangered species to honor their contribution to society.
Washington NATIONALS: that's fascist!
Philadelphia Phillies: sounds sexist!
Someone else mentioned the "Utes" could just change the spelling to "Yoots"... Just draw attention to the NCAA's complete idiocy.
