A day (actually 2 yrs) in the life of President Bush (8/6/05): many photos

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: With the President, First Lady and the dogs relaxing at the ranch this weekend, there are no new photos to post. So I've selected a theme -- GWB and our Armed Forces -- and found many photos to let us enjoy a walk down memory lane. The theme photos are all from early in his presidency. They show GWB's closeness with our military both before and after 9/11/01.

THE WEEK AHEAD:

Monday, the President travels to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He will be touring the Sandia Laboratory there, and then will be making remarks after signing the comprehensive energy legislation that passed recently.

Tuesday, the President is going to have his economic advisors to the ranch. He will participate in a briefing with them on the state of our economy. Afterwards, GWB will make some remarks and participate in a press availability.

Wednesday, President Bush will traveling to Aurora, Illinois, where he will sign the transportation legislation. Aurora is the largest town in the north-central Illinois congressional district of House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Saturday, tentative, but the President usually participates in an RNC event in August at the ranch. As of yesterday, the President's schedule was not firmed up beyond Wednesday.

QUOTE OF THE DAY Excerpt from the presidential radio address, Saturday, August 6, 2005:

As families across the country enjoy the summer, Americans can be optimistic about our economic future. In the past four years, our economy has been through a lot: we faced a stock market decline, a recession, corporate scandals, an attack on our homeland, and the demands of an ongoing war on terror.

To grow the economy and help American families, we acted by passing the largest tax relief in a generation. And today, thanks to the tax relief and the efforts of America's workers and entrepreneurs, our economy is strong and growing stronger.

This past week, we learned that America added over 200,000 new jobs in July. Since May of 2003, we've added nearly 4 million new jobs. The unemployment rate is down to 5 percent, below the average of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. And more Americans are working today than ever before in our nation's history.

We need to make the tax relief permanent, end the death tax forever, and make our tax code simpler, fairer and more pro-growth.

While I noticed that Fox's Wendell Goler is reporting from the ranch, I'll bet Terry Moran, David Gregory and Helen Thomas are about as far away from Crawford as they can get. Wouldn't want to melt all that makeup, now would we.

they sure don't make 'em like Stewart and Wayne anymore.

I agree. Something about that era, the Great Depression, WWII--everybody was made of tougher stuff in those days, it seems, even actors. Lee Marvin is another favorite from that time. He was a Marine wounded on Iwo Jima--he almost died from his wounds. Actors today like George Clooney can only pretend to be soldiers, and then unconvincingly.

Correction: Lee Marvin wasn't wounded on Iwo Jima, he was wounded at Saipan. (I should Google before I post :)

This is one of my very favorite pictures of the President with his military.

G'day, OWF. Glad you like the photos. Bitt posted a joke and a photo of the current president if Iran, then asked the moderator to pull it. Not sure, but I think the moderator decided to pull all the comments before the all clear because of the volume of photos.

YOU KNOW that the conditions in Crawford, Texas are the MAIN reason that the MSM is griping about all of the vacation time that President Bush takes....LOL

I believe he was out walking in Scotland and was taken ill and pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital.

As far as British politics I cannot really see any impact as he resigned as leader of the house at time of the Iraq war due to policy differences.

Yes, there's something -- I don't know -- too soft or too pretty about them. Or maybe it's just that we know their politics and know they aren't in the least sincere in such roles.

Did you know that Jimmy Stewart retired as a brigadier general in the Air Force reserves? He was one of the first big Hollywood stars to join up after Pearl Harbor, and he flew many combat missions. He achieved the highest military rank of any Hollywood star.

Thanks for adding those two great photos. I remember both pics and it's good to see them again. The one where GWB is running up to shake their hands tugs at my heart.

Isn't that a cool photo of the Reagan test firing her missiles in post #11? I think her first deployment is supposed to be sometime next year.

I just got Tall in the Saddle, and was able to watch it just before the TV broke. Early B&W John Wayne classic. Still fun to watch.

The High and the Mighty is on its way here. I've been waiting for that film for years.

I guess it's too soon to know what caused his collapse. According to the news I've seen, he was an avid walker and cyclist. So I assume that he was thought to be in good health.

Last night I watched "Mrs. Minivar" with Greer Garson. She was just great--showing the Brit's resolve during the Battle of Britain. It was Winston Churchill's favorite movie.

Amazon (with super saver shipping) had High and the Mighty a bit cheaper than Walmart. But even with sales tax Island in the Sky is cheaper at Walmart, so I'll pick it up next time I'm in there.

Hondo is going to be released in the near future. Can't wait. Just reread the Louis L'Amour classic before shipping it to the wounded at Landstuhl in Germany.
