IRAQI security forces, set up by American and British troops, torture detainees by pulling out their fingernails, burning them with hot irons or giving them electric shocks, Iraqi officials say. Cases have also been recorded of bound prisoners being beaten to death by police.

In their haste to put police on the streets to counter the brutal insurgency, Iraqi and US authorities have enlisted men trained under Saddam Hussein’s regime and versed in torture and abuse, the officials told The Times. They said that recruits were also being drawn from the ranks of outlawed Shia militias.

Counter-insurgencies are rarely clean fights, but Iraq’s dirty war is being waged under the noses of US and British troops whose mission is to end the abuses of the former dictatorship. Instead, they appear to have turned a blind eye to the constant reports of torture from Iraq’s prisons.

Among the worst offenders cited are the Interior Ministry police commandos, a force made up largely of former army officers and special forces soldiers drawn from the ranks of Saddam’s dissolved army. They are seen as the most effective tool the coalition has in fighting the insurgency.

An Iraqi official said that the Iraqi National Guard, the US-trained paramilitary police, regularly disposed of the corpses of its victims by throwing them in the river. “The problem is that some people have still got that training from the past,” he said. “You have ten or twelve of them in the same unit working, and if they seize terrorists they will torture or kill them.”

Since the MSM wants us to leave Iraq and wants the Iraqi Army to fail, I guess that means by a process of simple deduction that they want Zarqawi to win.

Notice that the same thing happens every day in Saudi, Egyptian, and Pakistani jails, but you don't hear a peep about them by the MSM.

This is the MSM's new "paradigm" from now on: The US & UK "set up" Iraq, so ANYTHING wrong in Iraq from now on, is our fault, no matter who did it.

Just as whatever happened under Saddam was blamed exclusively on Saddam and not those who followed him, it's no one's fault--it's The Man's fault. The No Personal Responsibility Mentality in its worldwide form.

Of course, after we set up Germany and Japan, they were "beating us at our own game" and they were considered free people set loose from Hitler or whatever, but don't look to these folks for consistency.

I don't know about the liberals but I'm not losing an ounce of sleep over this.The Times wants us to apply western standards to an area where physical violence is the norm.It would be shocking to learn that the Kurds and Shiite weren't taking revenge against the Sunni.The fact that the retaliation is being kept under control shows us how far the country has come.The liberal Whiners at the Times should be ignored because they will always find something to cry about when it comes to Iraq.

Right on the mark. The core problem is not US strategy or poor decisions, but the vile nature of Islam and almost all Islamic societies.

Algerians fought a savage war to force the colonial French out, and then, having succeeded, went on to bicker and kill each other for a generation. Was colonialism the problem? No, because brutality and cruelty are the rule, not the exception in Islamic societies.

Iraq has the prospect of a better outcome because we do not seek colonies and are doing things better than the French did in Algeria. But if Iraq goes bad, we will know that occupation and reform among Muslims is unworkable. The next time, it will be a matter of smashing hard and then installing pro-American SOBs and let them have a free hand.

Don't think that there aren't alot of Sunnis in the Iraqi military right, remember as the article says alot of these were memebers of the old Iraqi Army.
