Yeah, average citizens are much safer when only trained law enforcement officers and the military have guns.

“We are not anti-gun, anti-hunter or anti-NRA,” Green Bay Police Chief Craig Van Schyndle said at a press event held by WAVE at the Brown County Courthouse in Green Bay. “This is an officer-safety issue and a community-safety issue. Green Bay, Appleton and Brown County are very safe communities, and concealed carry is a very dangerous proposition.”

On what study or experience of shall issue CCW states does this nitwit base his opinion? Shall issue CCW invariably produces a DROP in violent crime. It looks like he wants to keep the criminals in business.

In a way I can understand. I would feel safer knowing the guy I just pulled over for no seat belt didn't have a gun but in reality though we aren't the ones they should be concerned about. The bad guys are always going to get weapons and they aren't going to care about breaking any laws.

I can see that. However, the flip side to that is the safety that having the permit usually shows. In Texas, a CHL basically tells the officer that you've never committed a felony, haven't committed a misdemeanor in at least 10 years, have all your state taxes, etc. paid. Basically that you're a decent, law-abiding person. And the way the CHL class is structured here, it makes one thing long and hard about the consequences of using your weapon. Even if your completely justified. Like you say, the bad guys will always carry 'em. The good guys are generally willing to undergo a little extra scrutiny to legally level the playing field, so to speak.

From Robert Heinlein's "Beyond This Horizon, and exchange between Mordan Claude and Hamilton Felix. Felix is expressing his doubts about the custom of going armed, and Mordan explains why it is a good one:

“Well, in the first place an armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life. For me, politeness is a sine qua non of civilization. That’s a personal evaluation only. But gunfighting has a strong biological use. We do not have enough things to kill off the weak and stupid these days. But to stay alive as an armed citizen a man has to be either quick with wits or with his hands, preferably both. It’s a good thing.”

“Maybe so,” Felix answered slowly, “but it does seem like there ought to be a better way to do it. This way is pretty sloppy. Sometimes the bystanders get burned.”

“The alert ones don’t,” Mordan pointed out. “But don’t expect human institutions to be efficient. They never have been; it is a mistake to think they can be made so…[b]ecause we are sloppy, individually—and therefore collectively.”

So what's not to like there?

Not surprising. It's been decades since I've know an LEA who was in favor of civilians being armed.

That's good because I don't hear it around this area. Even my instructor was negative (why he teaches I have no idea).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You should mention that Texas law requires CHL holders to show the traffic officer their CHL -- along with the driver's license.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Last Thanksgiving, I was stopped by an officer in a rural Texas town. When I showed him my CHL, he asked, "Sir, do you have your sidearm with you?" I replied, "Yes, Officer, I do."

To which he replied, "Great! It don't do you any good if you don't have it with you!"

...just one of the many things I love about being back home in God's Country!...

"I haven't met a police officer yet, including my brother and the one that taught my handgun class that are for them. Tough."

What do they say about reduced crime after states approve of conceal carry laws?
