Jerry Garcia's Conservative Children
The New York Sun ^ | 8/9/05 | John P. Avlon

Think back to the ringing guitars, the spinners, the patchouli oil and the haze of pot smoke hanging over an arena - the psychedelic country rock of Grateful Dead concerts seem like an unlikely cradle for today's conservative commentators.

And yet, 10 years to the day after Jerry Garcia's death on August 9, 1995, no less than three of Generation X's most high-profile young conservatives remain dedicated Deadheads: Deroy Murdock, Tucker Carlson, and Ann Coulter.

I've loved the Dead for 25 years and I've never not been a conservative.

Tucker Carlson

I'd pay ca$h money to see Bowtie Boy at a Dead concert, standing next to some of the freakier types.

Ok, time for Deadhead jokes.

Q: Why do deadheads wave their hands in front of their faces during a Grateful Dead concert?

A: To keep the music out of their eyes.

Q. How do you know when deadheads have been to your home?

A. They are still there.

They went through the whole rainforest bit, and they were against Vietnam, but by today's standards (Dixie Chicks, Springsteen, etc.) they pretty much stayed out of politics and did what they did best (and they did it better than any band EVER!).

Wow! 10 years!

I remember hearing it on the radio, getting ready for work. We had "The Dead" playing for...probably the next 3-4 days 24/7 around here.

There never was, or will be another player like Papa Jerry.

I used to be a big deadhead, went to several concerts in the early to mid 90's.

I never was a lefty either.

I went to dozens in the 80's and 90's, I got a few funny looks for the Reagan and Bush bumper stickers on my cars, but that was about it.
