Jerry Garcia's Conservative Children
The New York Sun ^ | 8/9/05 | John P. Avlon

Think back to the ringing guitars, the spinners, the patchouli oil and the haze of pot smoke hanging over an arena - the psychedelic country rock of Grateful Dead concerts seem like an unlikely cradle for today's conservative commentators.

And yet, 10 years to the day after Jerry Garcia's death on August 9, 1995, no less than three of Generation X's most high-profile young conservatives remain dedicated Deadheads: Deroy Murdock, Tucker Carlson, and Ann Coulter.

Ten years ago today I was working on a salmon boat in Alaska miserable as hell. I would pass the time day dreaming of getting off the boat with my fat check and heading to Fall Tour. The news of Jerry's death was like a sucker punch.

LOL

I saw the Dead in Berkley ~ 1980. I thought I would try something different. I went completely sober. I have rarely been that bored.

I've been a conservative for 50 years and the only "Dead" I've loved are dear friends and relatives.

He was an awesome banjo and flattop bluegrass picker, too. Tucker is a jackoff and Ann needs to eat some donuts. Blah, blah, blah... Even if you hated their music-individually they were excellent musicians. They were totally self-supporting and could give a rats ass about fans bootlegging their concerts and music. Metallica take note...

IIRC, Jerry was a fan of William F. Buckley.

Kerouac was a close friend of Buckley's. Add Dylan's hatred of hippiedom to the mix and 60's libs must be pooping their pants over their self-imagined glory days.

Sorry, the drug culture that has wrapped itself around the Grateful Dead turned me off from the beginning. I guess I'm disappointed that the Dead Heads didn't freakin EJECT those bums from DAY ONE! Having said all this, I salute your conservatism...

I don't really remember their music being very political either. It was just good ole folk rock fusion jam that sounded great.

Long time Deadhead.

The first Dead concert I went to was on 5/14/70 at Meramec Community College, Kirkwood, MO.

Grateful Dead and New Riders of the Purple Sage. From that point on I have enjoyed Country Rock.
