NRO's Lopez on Feminists For Life

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 NRO's Lopez on Feminists for Life

I mentioned Feminists for Life in one of yesterday's posts (please page down and see below - someday, I'll get those "Permanent Links" working). If you want to hear yesterday's show use this link. For some reason, On Point chose not to "Feature" this interview on their main web page.

Today's National Review Online published a piece by one of my favorite reporters, Katheryn Jean Lopez. As she says, Justice John Roberts and his wife, Jane Sullivan Roberts have already made history.

What a problem Mrs. Roberts' involvement as legal advisor and some-times board member of FFL must cause. On the one hand, this is a woman with credentials in her own right, a family, and a successful husband. She could be an example that feminists everywhere could point to with pride. If only she weren't anti-abortion.

The New York Times has already admitted to investigating the circumstances of the Roberts' adoptions. During the On Point (NPR) radio interview, yesterday, the NOW representative couldn't resist pointing out that the Roberts children were blond. And every article I've read about Justice Roberts himself mentions his wife's affiliation with FFL - usually in conjunction with some pro-abortion "feminist" who implies that this somehow compromises the nominee.

Ms. Lopez mentions that younger girls and women are more likely to disapprove as a group of abortion than similar groups 20 years ago.

Perhaps that's because thanks to groups like FFL and all those brave women who are the giants upon whose shoulders we stand today have made real our hoped-for world where women can be both career women and mothers - where pregnancy does not mean the end of education and opportunity.

It's time for NOW and the other supposedly feminist "pro-women" organizations (whose main focus is actually ensuring that abortion is anything *but* rare) to recognize that theirs is not the only expression of feminism. And be happy for common ground on which to stand as we build on the past so that our daughters may have a better future.

I promise not to post my own material often, but good grief, Feminists for Life is not getting enough press even if it's more than they usually get.

Feminism is not all one homologous mix, anymore than conservatism, the Republican Party or even Christians are.

Shameless ping!

Please take a quick look at my website LifeEthics, too.

And if anyone knows a decent program for web site management - one that would let me be the "webmaster" so I don't have to wake someone up at 3 AM (when I do my best work), and that's not too expensive, I'd appreciate the information.

I'm tired of winging it with Publisher and my own cross-eyed HTML.

This site is usually used for retail, but it's extremely easy to use for any type of website. Cheap too.

Thanks!

Go Daddy is evidently a fairly stable place to park my website, but their "help" sections are mostly ads.

I'm slowly learning what is obviously a completely different language. I'm only moderately good at languages.

They really made a point of mentioning that the children are blonde? Boy, NARAL and their ilk are TOTALLY stuck in the past (Republicans are Nazis, yadda, yadda, yadda; Iraq is a "quagmire" like VietNam, yadda, yadda, yadda)! It is so laughable to me that this is the best they can come up with!

Yes, the woman, Olga Vives (ironic name: Lives), the executive Vice President of NOW, was giving misinformation about all those babies who aren't adopted and - ugh - stated flat out that she couldn't imagine giving her babies up for adoption. (although she never actually went on to she'd rather they were dead, since she was pushing intentional abortion, I guess that's what she meant).

Fortunately, one of the reps from FFL could tell the truth about the majority of children in foster care: they are not adoptable for some legal reason. The woman said her father was in foster care because he was not released for adoption.

The leadership of my college's pro-life club in the 1980s were all women and big fans of Feminists For Life. We had a few speakers from them and they were all pretty impressive.

I've only met 2 members in real life.

One was at a Democrats for Life meeting in Texas (and I was barely introduced, we didn't get to talk).

The other was at the Common Ground Conference run by The Medical Institute for Sexual Health (an abstinence advocacy group) in Washington, D.C., a year ago.

But, the virtual community is strong, as is shown by these women in the interview. It's more than worth the listen.

FFL is one of the most powerful pro-life voices out there, sadly, as you point out, under the radar, until now. They are potent because they argue against Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and the National Organization of (real?) Women in their own terms: women's health, needs, and rights.

FFL is pro-woman. And they/we do focus on the baby at the same time.

Feminism before abortion was about "having it all." Somehow the conversation changed to having what men had, while stiffling the "feminine" part of feminism, which includes pregnancy, parenting.
