This man actually won, just not the Presidency. His vision corrupted an entire generation, and led to the deaths of maybe millions. I hope he is rotting in hell if dead, and if alive......I hope he is dreaming nightly of rotting. The legacy of 60's & 70's liberals (really communists) will forever taint this country

He is alive.

He endorsed Wesley Clark (but dropped strong hints of support for Howard Dean) in 2004 then backed John Kerry.

He spoke at some anti-war rallies and talked with the X-files wing of the rat party calling for whistle blowers to take down Bush.

He is today active with the UN as some kind of ambassador opposed to hunger or poverty or something (why am I not surprised he is involved with the UN).

I was in Vietnam during the 72 election and remember shuddering when he stated his plan for peace was for him, as President, "to crawl to Hanoi". Actually it maight have engendered some dissention within the communist politburo when they agrued about who was going to "un-button" first for George.

I always thought he sounded too much like Liberache to be taken seriously. However,in retrospect his character and personal integrity far exceeds recent democrat presidents, candidates, and party leaders - although that's not saying much.

I actually saw this movie at a film festival. Here is what people on FR would probably enjoy in the film: It gets very blunt about the dirty tricks Dems play on each other, and goes into great detail about how McGovern's candidacy for president was practically derailed by his own party, following all the in-party bickering after his nomination. Things got so bad that McGovern -- according to the film -- had only 2 days to vet his VP nominee (Eagleton) because of all the fighting that went on in the Dem Party for six straight weeks once he became the candidate. Then, of course, Eagleton's mental problems came out, and well, we know the rest of the story. Truly, I was amazed at how the film did not stop short of making Dem leaders look like total idiots at certain points in the film.

Surprisingly, to me at least, McGovern had a big military background.

Are you sure his wife voted for him? I know my mom did. Paul Newman came to our little town to stump for him & mom has a real weakness for blue eyes...

The liberals, not finding 2005 much to their liking, have decided to go live during the time that meant the most to them: the Vietnam War, when they rightously cheered the communists on to victory and genocide in the name of peace.

He flew a B-24 in completing 35 missions over Europe and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross. Although I do not agree with his politics in many respects, I believe McGovern deserves to be honored for his service to this Republic. See the late Stephen Ambrose's take on McGovern

Are you sure his wife voted for him?

It was an assumption. Of course, another obvious assumption is that his wife knew him too well to vote for him. So maybe your mother's vote was number 4 ...

I told her over and over again that if it was Nixon in '72 she voted for McGovern, but she insisted that wasn't right.

I think George Wallace also ran in 72, so she could have voted for him.

"The film retraces George McGovern's bold and grassroots presidential campaign of 1972..."
Yeah and I bet they were able to acknowledge everyone in the country who actually voted for him, in the credits at the end of the film.

Well.. Benedict Arnold was a hero before he turned traitor.

Same for McGovern, he was a hero before he turned into a socialist, anti-war, anti-american.

The worthless POS will probably live to be 100.

72 was the year Wallace was shot. He lost the primary to McGovern. If she voted against Nixon and voted for the Democrat (as she told me) then she voted for McGovern.

Pauline Kael, the New York Times film critic was said to have remarked she couldn't find one person who voted for Nixon. That was a telling revelation of the mindset of the liberal establishment in NY. They hated NIxon to a T and in a little than two years succeeded in driving him out of office. Their stripes haven't changed and they still want to impeach a Republican President. In these people's world, they were always betrayed by Republican knavery, never by the fact the country never bought their liberal policies.

I see what you are saying, but I think he really never had any power to accomplish any of his agenda -- even in the Senate. What is sad and reprehensible is that our allies in SE Asia were abandoned during and therefore by a Republican administration. The Democrat-controlled Congress shares the blame, but the Executive was in a position to do something about what happened, or so it seems to me.

There is something I can't figure out

South Dakota is a mostly Republican State whose people pride themselves in self reliance work hard pull yourself up and they keep sending communists to Washington - i.e McGovern - Dashcle - Herseth - HHH Humphreys was born and raised in SD but was elected from Minnesota or South Dakota would have had him too.

They had local home-grown agragrian socialists in the prairie states for a while. Democrats like McGovern and Tom Daschle were a product of that legacy.
