The state attorney general's office and the city's Department of Investigation are looking into whether a boys and girls club serving poor children and ailing elderly people in the Bronx had improper financial dealings, including loans to the Air America radio network, state and city officials said yesterday.

Investigators from the charities bureau of the attorney general's office, which oversees about 60,000 nonprofit agencies in the state, requested documents from the club last week but have yet to receive them, state officials said.

The allegations of financial mismanagement at Gloria Wise came to light in June...

Jim Grossman, a spokesman for Gloria Wise, said the club had given Air America about $875,000, though he added that he did not know exactly how, or in what form, it had been given. He also said the club and the network had reached an agreement under which the money had been placed in an escrow account and would eventually be repaid to the club.

Jaime Horn, a spokeswoman for Air America, said the loans had come to the network through its former chairman, Evan M. Cohen, a venture capitalist, who resigned from Air America in May 2004 under pressure from other company investors. Ms. Horn added that investigators recently told the network that Mr. Cohen had served simultaneously as the development director for Gloria Wise, although the network was not aware of that at the time.

Nonetheless, word of the investigations ignited a firestorm of criticism on the Internet, especially among conservative-leaning blogs that have essentially accused the network of robbing from the poor to pay its bills. "Air America: Stealing From Poor Kids?" asked the headline of a recent posting by Michelle Malkin, a conservative commentator.

I think that is one non profit per 300 NY residents. That is a whole lot of non profits. It is no wonder NY taxes are so high. No one is making any profits to tax.
"All the news that fits our slant"
Note that in this article, the NYT labels Michelle Malkin a "conservative" while not attaching any ideological label, let alone "liberal", to Air America or Al Franken.
Be sure to see Michelle's coverage of the NYT "coverage".

In addition to spinning and burying, the NYT also
appeared to quote, but actually materially altered,
Franken's on-air comments (admissions, really) about
the scandal.

Enron didn't do anything wrong.....it's now a different company or something...right?
But of course.

They must have changed the article. Michelle Malkin's name no longer appears in it.
One of the things I was looking for as I read the excerpts also. In the complete article they did manage one single reference to Err Amerika's leftist sympathies:
...made improper loans of up to $875,000 to the radio network, known for its liberal programming and hosts like the comedian Al Franken.(You'll note of course that Al Franken is apparently NOT liberal...
Not bad considering there would have been ZIP, ZERO, NADA references before the Pajama Patrol began cruising the web.
One other reference I'm sure just had to grate was their admission that the NY Post was the first to reveal the resignations of several mukkity mucks at the charity.
Luvit! heh,heh

Franken used to be a sentient being, right?
Thanks for the ping.

False!
Al's "expert" opinion.
I bet several nyt editors developed a case of the vapors over this. I can't stop grinning.
